Hello, this is 속초어때 (Sokcho Eottae). As of Monday, September 28, at 12 PM, Sokcho (속초) is 24°C with a few clouds, a high of 25°C, a low of 18°C, and a 6% chance of rain. Even though it's the first weekday after the Chuseok holiday, the Daepo Port (대포항) observatory is very crowded, Cheongchoho Lake (청초호) and Oeongchi Port (외옹치항) are crowded, and traffic is slow on all three access roads: Misiryeong-ro (미시령로), Donghae-daero (동해대로), and Seoraksan-ro (설악산로).
This morning, the October performance and exhibition schedule for 속초문화예술회관 (Sokcho Munhwa Yesul Hoegwan) came out in the news all at once. There are six performances, from classical music and opera to a family play and a children's musical. There's one thing that's easy to miss if you only look at the schedule. Each performance has a different way and a different date for getting tickets. Some are already on sale, some open for booking on October 6, and one has no advance booking at all and hands out tickets on-site on the day, first come, first served. Today we've sorted them into these three groups.
October Performances at 속초문화예술회관 at a Glance

Exhibitions continue as well. Works by local artists, including 'Blue Period', 'Sokcho Seouhoe Regular Exhibition', and the '19th Seorak Watercolor Exhibition', will be on display throughout October. Even if you couldn't get performance tickets, you can still see the exhibitions if you stop by the venue.
Already on Sale: 'Four Seasons of Gangwon - Autumn' on the 15th, Half Price for Gangwon Residents
Of the six performances, this is the one whose tickets were released first. It's a Daegwallyeong Music Festival special performance organized by the Gangwon Cultural Foundation, and booking has been open since September 2 at 2 PM on the Daegwallyeong Music Festival website and NOL Ticket. If you confuse it with the other performances that open for booking on October 6 and wait, you may miss out on good seats.
The lineup is the most impressive of this month's performances. Cellist Yang Sung-won, pianist Enrico Pace, violinist Lee Ji-yoon, and violist Lee Su-min take the stage under the theme 'The Bohemian Soul - From the Land to Art'. They will perform Bartók's 'Romanian Folk Dances', Kodály's 'Duo for Violin and Cello, Op. 7', and Brahms's 'Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25'. It's a chance to see these performers in Sokcho without going all the way to Daegwallyeong.
- Admission: R seats 60,000 KRW, S seats 30,000 KRW
- Discounts: 50% for Gangwon Province residents, students, people with disabilities, and persons of national merit. For Sokcho residents, R seats are 30,000 KRW and S seats are 15,000 KRW.
- Practical tip: Discounts are usually verified on-site with ID, so even if you booked online, be sure to bring an ID showing your address. Tourists aren't eligible for the discount, so it's a good idea to look at S seats first.
Booking Opens Tuesday, October 6, at 10 AM: Family Play on the 21st, Harmonica on the 31st
Performances hosted by Sokcho City and the Sokcho Cultural Tourism Foundation can be booked from October 6 at 10 AM on the 속초문화예술회관 website and at the management office. October 3 to 5 is a long weekend with National Foundation Day and a substitute holiday, so booking opens the morning after the holiday ends. We recommend setting an alarm on your phone in advance.
'Little Station Cantabile' on October 21 is a musical family play set at a small rural train station that explores the value of life and the meaning of coexistence at a child's level. Since it's on a Wednesday, a weekday, check the performance time first and see whether it works with daycare and school pick-up times.
'Park Jong-seong with KCO Harmonica Rhapsody' on October 31 is a performance by harmonica player Park Jong-seong together with the Korean Chamber Orchestra (KCO). A harmonica performing with an orchestra is not a common sight, so it's worth seeing even for those unfamiliar with classical music.
- Admission: 20,000 KRW, 50% off for Seorak-area residents (10,000 KRW)
- Age: Elementary school students and older. Preschool children cannot enter, so keep this in mind for a family outing.
- Time: Saturday, 2 PM. It will still be light out when the show ends, so it pairs well with the Cheongchoho Lake Chrysanthemum Exhibition (September 30 - November 8).
No Booking, First Come on the Day: Opera 'Turandot' on the 23rd, All Seats Free
This is the standout performance of the month. The opera gala concert 'Turandot', hosted by the Gangwon M Opera Company and the incorporated association Kkumepume, is free for all seats. However, there is no online booking, and tickets are handed out at the venue box office on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 5:30 PM on the day of the performance, Friday, October 23.
Tickets for free performances often run out quickly. If you were planning to head over straight after work, you'll need to hurry a bit. Here are some practical tips.
- Arrive around 5 PM: It's a Friday evening, so commuter traffic overlaps with weekend tourists. If all the access roads are slow like today, getting around town will also take longer than usual.
- Whether you can pick up tickets for your group: It hasn't been announced yet how many tickets are given per person. If you're watching with family, it's safer for everyone to line up together.
- Dinner: After getting your tickets, you'll have about 1 hour 30 minutes until the show starts. Rather than going far, it's better to grab a light meal near the venue.
The Children's Musical on the 3rd Falls on a Seorak Cultural Festival Day
The children's musical 'Who Pooped on My Head?' on Saturday, October 3, is based on a well-known picture book and is a good show to see with kids. However, that day is the second day of the 61st Seorak Cultural Festival (October 2-4) and National Foundation Day, with a parade through downtown scheduled for the afternoon. Traffic may be restricted or congested in various parts of the city, so check the performance time and allow plenty of travel time. If you plan to enjoy both the show and the festival in one day, it's a good idea to plan your route in advance.
There is also the 'I Semi Ensemble Regular Concert' on Thursday, October 8. Detailed times and admission for these two performances can be found on the 속초문화예술회관 website.

Residents in particular should make good use of the 50% discount for Seorak-area residents and the 50% discount for Gangwon Province residents. The discount eligibility differs by performance (all Gangwon residents on the 15th, Seorak-area residents on the 31st), so be sure to check the discount options when booking. If you're a traveler, try adding the evening performance on October 15 (Thu) or 23 (Fri) to an overnight trip. It makes for a course where you enjoy the sea and Seoraksan (설악산) during the day and the concert hall in the evening.
