Today I'll go over how to use this in-between day, focusing above all on a route that doesn't waste your day even if you get rained on.

With a water temperature of 25.8°C and 0.2 m waves, conditions for getting into the water are actually among the best of the entire summer. But as you know, Sokcho Beach, Oeongchi Beach (외옹치) and Cheongho Beach (청호) already closed on Sunday, August 23. Today is the second day since the closing. The sea is at its best, but there is only one place you can actually go in — the ironic day that repeats every year around this time.
Partly cloudy with a 96% chance of rain — that means "showers"
Many people see a 96% chance of rain and immediately pack a rain poncho, but today's rain in Sokcho has a slightly different character. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration forecast, the northern Gangwon (강원) east coast — that is, the Sokcho and Goseong (고성) area — is forecast to have scattered showers from late morning through the afternoon, with expected rainfall of 5–20 mm. It isn't monsoon rain pouring down all day, but passing showers brushing through several times.
Why this matters to travelers is that it isn't a reason to cancel your plans, but it is a reason to change their order. A shower lasts 30–40 minutes at most. Just be indoors during that time, and once it stops the temperature actually dips for a while and walking gets easier. In fact, yesterday too, the number of people strolling the coastal road noticeably increased in the evening after the rain passed.
A practical tip: today, a folding umbrella and a breathable short-sleeve shirt beat a long umbrella. With a high of 32°C and high humidity, a rain poncho will leave you soaked in sweat from the inside. Also, road surfaces get slippery after a shower, so I'd suggest waiting a little before heading to places where water lingers, like the breakwater at Daepo Port (대포항) or the stairs at Yeonggeumjeong (영금정).
Six crowded spots right now — and not one of them is a beach
As of this morning, the places registering high congestion in Sokcho are as follows.

- Daepo Port Observatory — crowded
- 한화리조트 설악 워터피아 (Hanwha Resort Seorak Waterpia) — crowded
- Cheongchoho (청초호) — crowded
- 척산족욕공원 (Cheoksan Foot Bath Park) — crowded
- 금호리조트㈜ 설악 (Kumho Resort Co., Ltd. Seorak) — crowded
Look at the list closely and a pattern appears. Four of the six are facilities with a roof or with water — accommodations, a water park, a foot-bath park. Not a single beach name is on it. That's evidence that, just two days after the closings, the center of gravity for people visiting Sokcho has shifted completely.
One conclusion follows from this. If you're heading to a big-name water facility like 워터피아 or 마레몬스 today, you have to settle it in the morning. The fact that they already registered as crowded or very crowded at 8 a.m. means that after lunch, just getting into the parking lot is likely to take 20–30 minutes. Conversely, at free facilities like 척산족욕공원, there's often a window of an hour or two right after a shower when it actually thins out.
Today's key point — the car-free street at 관광수산시장 shows its true value on a rainy day
The place I most want to recommend today is 속초관광수산시장 (Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market). The reason isn't simply that it's indoors, but that the walking environment of this market actually changed this summer.
The city of Sokcho operates a "car-free street" that closes two sections — the area around 중앙로147번길 (Jungang-ro 147beon-gil) and the area around 중앙시장로 (Jungangsijang-ro) — to vehicle traffic every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. And this didn't end as a slogan. According to reported figures, vehicle traffic in the controlled sections fell from a daily average of 4.8 vehicles before the measure to a daily average of 0.5 vehicles, a drop of about 89%, and since implementation not a single pedestrian traffic accident has occurred within the sections.
Anyone who has walked the market's alleys will understand the size of this change. In the past, you'd be standing in a narrow alley in front of a shop slicing raw fish and have to press yourself aside because of a car coming up behind you. Strollers and wheelchairs often gave up on entering altogether. In particular, when it rains people crowd under the eaves and the gap between cars and pedestrians narrows even further, so on a day like today with showers coming and going, having the traffic control in place makes a considerable difference in practice.
That said, there are some practical things you should know.
- The traffic control starts at 10 a.m. If you arrive during the 9 o'clock hour, cars are still driving through. People often try to drive deep into the alleys and then struggle to find a turnaround point, so it's faster to park in a public lot on the edge of the market and walk in.
- Loading and unloading vehicles come and go before and after the control hours, so you still need to watch for traffic early in the morning and after 6 p.m.
- On rainy days, the inner sections with arcade roofs fill up first. For items with lines, like 닭강정 (dakgangjeong) or 오징어순대 (ojingeo sundae), between 10 and 11 a.m. is the most relaxed.
At 속초어때 we've watched congestion throughout the summer peak season, and the market is a place where the "rainy day indicator" is unusually clear. Now that the beaches are closed, even more so.
Deungdae Beach (등대해수욕장) now has six days left, including today
The one place in Sokcho where you can still officially go into the water is Deungdae Beach. When the city of Sokcho closed Sokcho, Oeongchi and Cheongho beaches on August 23, it decided to extend operations at Deungdae Beach alone for one week, through August 30. Today is the 25th, so that's six days including today — D-5.
The reason Deungdae Beach was chosen for the extension is clear. The water is shallow and the waves are relatively calm, so it draws many family visitors. On a day like today, with 0.2 m waves and a water temperature of 25.8°C, conditions are good for going in with children.
Let's also check the safety side. The city of Sokcho says it has kept water safety lifeguards stationed at the three closed beaches as well, continuing on-site patrols and safety guidance, and that lifeguards will also be stationed at Deungdae Beach during the extended operating period. However, going into the water at the closed beaches is still not recommended. Lifeguards being present and a beach being open are completely different things. If you plan to get into the water today, be sure to go to Deungdae Beach, and check the on-site sign for permitted swimming hours first.
And today there's the shower variable. When a rain cloud passes over, you must get out of the water. Even with low waves, a sudden gust accompanying a shower can briefly build up the swell.
An indoor option for escaping the rain — the municipal museum is already proven
It's good to have an indoor option to get through the shower hours. 속초시립박물관 (Sokcho Municipal Museum) has drawn more than 26,000 visitors this summer, a 32% increase over last year. Being able to see the Displaced Persons Culture Village (실향민 문화촌) and the Balhae History Hall (발해역사관) together has been especially well received by families with children. The children's cultural performance "아트박스 (Art Box)" by the Sokcho Culture & Tourism Foundation (속초문화관광재단) selling out all through August is part of the same trend. It's a signal that demand in Sokcho at the tail end of summer is broadening from the sea to indoor content.
All three access roads are slow — today, buying time pays off
This morning, all three routes into Sokcho are less than smooth.
- Misiryeong-ro (미시령로, toward Seoul) — slow
- Donghae-daero (동해대로, coast and downtown) — slow
- Seoraksan-ro (설악산로, toward Seoraksan) — slow
Three routes moving slowly at once, even on a Tuesday morning, means weekday commuter traffic has overlapped with end-of-summer travel traffic. Add showers on top and the perceived speed on the coastal stretch of Donghae-daero drops further. For getting around town today, I'd suggest allowing an extra 15–20 minutes on your expected times. In particular, a route that takes you into Daepo Port or Seorakdong (설악동) and back out gets frustrating if it overlaps with the shower hours.
Here's how to spend the day
- 9–11 a.m.: Deungdae Beach, or a water facility such as 워터피아 or 마레몬스. Claim your spot before it gets crowded
- 11 a.m.–2 p.m.: lunch and snacks in the car-free section of 속초관광수산시장. Safe even if it overlaps with the shower hours
- 2–5 p.m.: indoor courses such as the municipal museum; the Cheongchoho walking path once the rain stops
- After 5 p.m.: sunset is at 19:06 — if the sky clears after the showers, Yeonggeumjeong or the 외옹치 바다향기로 (Oeongchi Badahyanggi-ro) coastal trail
- Heading home: all three access roads are slow, so leaving before the evening congestion is recommended
