Hello, this is 속초어때 (Sokcho Eottae). It is Tuesday, September 15, 2026, and right now, at 1 p.m., Sokcho is 23°C under clear skies. Looking out the window it seems like nothing but a peaceful autumn afternoon, but the road situation tells a slightly different story. All three of the main roads leading into Sokcho are moving slowly at the same time. And this is not a weekend or a holiday — it is lunchtime on an ordinary Tuesday. Today we will lay out what that single line means, and what those of you who are in Sokcho now or coming here today or this week should prepare, along with the actual numbers.
The roads into Sokcho right now: all three are slow
As of 1 p.m., the traffic situation for entering Sokcho is as follows.
- Misiryeong-ro (미시령로, toward Seoul) — slow
- Donghae-daero (동해대로, toward the coast and downtown) — slow
- Seoraksan-ro (설악산로, toward Seorak) — slow
Because of its geography, the ways into Sokcho essentially come down to these three axes. Misiryeong-ro is the gateway coming down from the Seoul metropolitan area, Donghae-daero is the north–south axis linking Yangyang, Gangneung and Goseong that also feeds into the downtown, and Seoraksan-ro is the road that branches off toward Seorak-dong and Sogongwon. So when one or two of the three are blocked you can go around by the others, but when all three slow down at once, it effectively means there is no detour.
The character is also different from weekend congestion. On weekends the flow spikes sharply — inbound between 10 a.m. and noon, outbound between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Today's weekday afternoon slowdown, by contrast, has no sharp peak and stays gently spread across the whole day, so waiting two or three hours before setting off often does not help much. If you are planning to come into Sokcho this afternoon, it is easier on the mind to add about 20 to 30 minutes to the arrival time your navigation app gives you.
It is a weekday Tuesday afternoon — so why the congestion?
There is not one reason; several currents overlap in mid-September.
- Sokcho is a destination that is officially being promoted right now. Sokcho was selected as Gangwon's recommended travel destination of the month for September, and it continues to be mentioned as a leading autumn destination where nature, relaxation and food come together. The fact that Seoraksan (설악산), Seorak Hyanggi-ro (설악향기로), Cheoksan Hot Springs (척산온천) and the 관광수산시장 (Gwanggwang Susan Sijang) are all gathered within a 20- to 30-minute drive, so that both day trips and one-night stays work, is frequently cited.
- The window just before the foliage is actually the smart play. Once the autumn colors at Seoraksan get going, the parking lots are the first thing to fill up. People who know this pick a weekday in mid-September, before the leaves turn, and come ahead of time. Right now Seorak is not crowded, but the air is already autumn.
- Pre-Chuseok grave-tending and ancestral visit traffic is mixed in. Instead of visiting family graves on the holiday itself, many people go ahead of time on a weekday before the holiday. These vehicles head for the outskirts and the foot of the mountains rather than downtown, so they affect the flow on the Seoraksan-ro side.
- This is the period with the highest weekday demand from groups and middle-aged travelers. Mid-September — after the heat has ended and before peak foliage-season rates kick in — is when the most tour buses are on the road.
Crowded spots now, and the quiet ones right next door
Congestion levels at tourist spots at the same hour look like this.
- Crowded — Daepohang (대포항) Observatory, Cheongchoho (청초호)
- Moderate — 켄싱턴호텔 설악 (Kensington Hotel Seorak), 신흥사 (Sinheungsa, Seoraksan), Cheongchoho Lake Park, Oeongchihang (외옹치항)
What is interesting is that the moderate places sit right next to the crowded ones. Daepohang Observatory is crowded precisely because it overlaps exactly with lunchtime. People looking for sashimi, mulhoe and fried shrimp all arrive at once between 12 and 1. Yet Oeongchihang, a five-minute drive away, is moderate right now. Oeongchi connects to the Badahyanggi-ro (바다향기로) walking trail, so it gives you a route where you can eat and then walk right afterward. If you are thinking of eating at Daepohang today, aim for after 2 p.m. rather than 1 o'clock sharp, and if parking is difficult, another option is to park on the Oeongchi side and walk in along the shore.
The split between Cheongchoho and Cheongchoho Lake Park is also worth noting. The reason the same lake shows different congestion levels is that Cheongchoho sits on a main route cutting through downtown, so passing vehicles get counted in as well. If you want to take the lake in properly, heading over to the lake park on the south side is far more relaxed. On the Seorak side, 신흥사 is moderate, so an afternoon hike in Seorak or a trip toward Gwongeumseong (권금성) is not a bad choice today.
Sokcho's sky and sea today
Today's temperatures in Sokcho are a high of 24°C and a low of 18°C. The daily range is only about 6 degrees, so one light outer layer is enough. That said, the chance of rain is 58%, which is not small. It is clear now, but that number means rain could brush through at some hour of the day. In mid-September in the Yeongdong region, it is common for short, heavy rain to pass through late in the afternoon or at night when a trough moves over the East Sea (동해). If you have outdoor plans today, we recommend keeping a folding umbrella in the car.

With the water still close to 24°C it is the kind of weather that makes you want to dip your feet in, but Sokcho's beaches all closed at the end of August. Please remember that this is water with no lifeguards. A wave height of 0.8 m is fine for breakwater fishing or a coastal walk, but on the East Sea there are days when swells suddenly roll in even with low waves. Please do not climb onto the tetrapods.
Sunset is also moving up faster than it feels. In early September it was around 6:50 p.m.; today it is 18:34. That is nearly 20 minutes shorter in half a month, and by this Sunday it drops to 18:26. If you are planning a hike on Seoraksan, it is safer to set 5 p.m. as the time to finish your descent. By 6:30 the forest paths are already dim.
Chuseok holiday D-9: what to check in advance now
This year Chuseok falls on Friday, September 25, and the holiday runs from Thursday, September 24 through Sunday, September 27. As of today that is exactly nine days away. Sokcho City has already activated a comprehensive Chuseok holiday plan made up of 24 tasks across five areas, and pulling out only the parts that are genuinely useful for both travelers and residents, here is what matters.
- Joint situation room — It will run from September 24 to 27 under a 17-team structure, with four teams — disaster safety, water supply, sewage and public facilities — working 24 hours. That means if something like a water outage or a facility failure happens during the holiday, there is somewhere open to call.
- Parking lots opened — City Hall and four nearby parking lots, 263 spaces in total, will be opened. If you plan to come to the downtown commercial area or the market during the holiday, it is better to check these first than to force your car into an alley.
- Medical care — An emergency care situation room will operate, and a list of hospitals, clinics and pharmacies open during the holiday will be provided. If you are coming with children or older family members, we recommend taking a screenshot in advance of at least one on-duty pharmacy nearest your accommodation.
- Daily-life information — Holiday living information such as hospital, clinic and pharmacy hours and waste collection schedules will be announced on the Sokcho City website and official social media. Changes to garbage collection days during the holiday are especially important for residents.
On top of that, there are benefits running right now. For Chuseok, Sokcho City is holding a special hometown love donation (고향사랑 기부) thank-you gift event through September 30, and at the fish market there is also a refund event returning 30% of the purchase amount as gift certificates, operated together with Wonju and Taebaek. If you are planning holiday grocery shopping, a weekday before the holiday is far easier than the weekend right before it.
To sum up, here is how to move today
- Entering Sokcho this afternoon: expected time +20 to 30 minutes. All three directions are slow, so there is little to gain from detouring.
- For lunch, shift one stop over to Oeongchihang instead of Daepohang and parking and waiting drop noticeably.
- For a lakeside walk, Cheongchoho Lake Park is more relaxed than Cheongchoho right now.
- On the Seorak side, the 신흥사 area is moderate. But finish your descent by 5 p.m. — sunset is 18:34.
- Chance of rain 58%, so keep an umbrella in the car. Even with a water temperature of 23.8°C, the sea is a closed zone, so please refrain from going in.
- Now is the right time to plan for the holiday. Check just these three in advance: 263 parking spaces, the emergency care situation room, and waste collection days.
