Hello, this is 속초어때 (Sokcho Eottae). At 5 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, Sokcho (속초) is at 20°C with a few clouds. The high today is 24°C, the low 19°C, and the chance of rain is 6%, so you can set aside any worry about umbrellas for the day. At sea, the wave height is 0.3 m and the water temperature is 23.7°C. On the Korea Meteorological Administration's advisory screen too, as of this hour there is not a single advisory in effect for the Yeongdong region of Gangwon or the central East Sea (동해) waters. No wind, no waves, no rain — that is this Sunday.
But when I opened Sokcho's congestion screen this morning, one thing stood out. Among the six places showing crowds right now, not a single one is the sea. And 0.3 m waves is practically a lake.
The three 'very crowded' spots at 5 a.m. are all in Seorak-dong
Here is what Sokcho's congestion looks like at this hour.
- Very crowded — 켄싱턴호텔 설악 (Kensington Hotel Seorak), 해피아울하우스(부엉이전시관) (Happy Owl House / Owl Exhibition Hall), 한화리조트 설악 워터피아 (Hanwha Resort Seorak Waterpia)
- Crowded — 학사평 콩꽃마을 순두부촌 (Haksapyeong Kongkkot Maeul Sundubu Village), Cheongchoho (청초호), 설악산 자생식물원 (Seoraksan Native Plant Garden)
The three very crowded spots all have addresses in Seorak-dong. And among the three marked as crowded, 학사평 순두부촌 and 설악산 자생식물원 are in Nohak-dong, lined up along the axis that climbs toward Seorak via Misiryeong-ro. Five of the six places are on the Seorak side, and only one, Cheongchoho, is in the downtown area.
You may wonder how an exhibition hall can be crowded at 5 a.m., but this congestion figure is not the number of people inside an open venue; it is closer to 'the interest and movement heading there right now.' In other words, it means the people who have just woken up in Sokcho are searching for Seorak as today's destination. And places that include lodging, like 켄싱턴호텔 and 워터피아, already have people staying there from last night to begin with. On this second weekend of September, it is a sign that Sokcho's center of gravity has clearly shifted from the beach to the mountain.
Sokcho's day already turned once, at 4:03 a.m.
Let me start with the tides off Sokcho today.
- High tide 04:03 (36 cm) / low tide 10:16 (19 cm)

The East Sea has a tidal range of around 20 cm, so you do not need to plan your whole day around the tides the way you would on the West Sea. That said, if you are heading down onto the rocky shore or a breakwater, the footing is widest around the 10:16 low tide. On a day like today with 0.3 m waves, water rarely splashes up to your feet even as the tide comes in, but the tetrapods on the breakwater are slippery from moss even on dry days. That is a danger unrelated to the waves.
Since it is now 5 a.m., there are exactly 65 minutes left until sunrise. With a few clouds and 0.3 m waves, conditions are right for the sun to come straight up over the horizon. If you head out now, you have plenty of time to find a spot at Yeonggeumjeong, the entrance to the Oeongchi Badahyanggi-ro, or Sokcho Beach.
All three roads to Seorak are showing 'slow-moving' right now
For inbound traffic, all three routes — Misiryeong-ro (toward Seoul), Donghae-daero (coast and downtown), and Seoraksan-ro (toward Seorak) — are marked as slow-moving. Slow-moving at 5 a.m. means cars that came in late last night and cars that set out early this morning are overlapping, and on a Sunday the afternoon return traffic gets layered on top of that.
Sokcho's Sunday traffic looks almost the same every week. Arrivals concentrate between 7 and 10 a.m., and Misiryeong-ro clogs up again between 2 and 4 p.m. with the cars heading out. So if you have something to do on the Seorak side today, it is better to order your day like this. Most places in 학사평 순두부촌 open at 7 a.m., so have breakfast at 7, and if you head up to Seorak-dong before 8, there will be room both in the parking lots and on the roads. Conversely, if you plan to return to Seoul, pushing your departure to before 1 p.m. or after 6 p.m. will save you a good 40 minutes in practice.
A rain-free Sunday: how to walk Seorak while spending almost nothing
With a 6% chance of rain and a high of 24°C, days this good for walking are rare. Here are only the free or low-cost courses that 속초어때 has checked against today's conditions.
- 설악산 자생식물원 — 164 바람꽃마을길 (Baramkkot-maeul-gil), Nohak-dong, Sokcho. Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., year-round. There is no admission fee and no parking fee. With some 50,000 plants of 123 native and rare Seoraksan species planted here, mid-September is peak season for the wildflowers. It is marked as crowded right now, but the grounds are wide enough that it does not feel cramped even when people gather.
- The Sogongwon area of Seoraksan National Park — There is no national park admission fee, only a parking fee. The gentle stretch up to Sinheungsa, the Tongil Daebul (Great Unification Buddha), and Biseondae can be done without hiking boots.
- Seorak Cable Car (Gwongeumseong) — No advance reservations; tickets are sold only at the on-site ticket office on the day. It climbs 1,128 m one way in about 5 minutes, and the arrival point is 699 m above sea level. However, operations change with the weather, so I recommend checking the real-time operating information or calling (033-636-4300) before you set out.
- 해피아울하우스(부엉이전시관) — Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with last admission at 5:30 p.m. It is closed every Monday, so it is open today, Sunday, but anyone who was planning to go tomorrow should move their plans up to today.
The foliage is not here yet — exactly three weeks to go
Seeing the crowds head for Seorak, you might wonder whether the autumn foliage has already started, but not yet. This year's first foliage on Seoraksan is expected around October 3. With September and October temperatures forecast to run above average, this is a year when both the first foliage and the peak come later than usual. The peak on Seoraksan is forecast for around October 25. Counting from today, that is 20 days until the first foliage.
Put another way, right now is the last stretch when you can walk Seorak at leisure, before the foliage crowds arrive. From the first weekend of October, the Sogongwon parking lot starts filling up by 8 a.m.
Let me add one more thing here. This year's Chuseok falls on Friday, September 25, and the holiday runs four days, from Thursday, September 24 through Sunday, September 27. There is no substitute holiday. As of today, there are 11 days until the holiday starts, and in Sokcho, Misiryeong-ro is the stretch that jams up worst on the first and last days of the holiday. If you have not booked lodging yet, it is better to decide within this week.
Recent news that is genuinely useful for residents
- 30% gift certificate refund at fishery markets — An event returning 30% of your purchase amount as gift certificates is under way at the fishery markets in Wonju, Taebaek, and Sokcho. If you have Chuseok shopping ahead of you, check the refund conditions and limits at the market information desk before you buy.
- Car-free street at 속초관광수산시장 (Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market) — Since it took effect, vehicle traffic around the market has actually decreased. When going to the market, parking at an outer lot and walking in is now the faster route.
- A blueprint has been drawn up for the 속초육아복합지원센터 (Sokcho Childcare Complex Support Center), and three recipients of the Sokcho Citizens' Grand Prize (속초시민 대상) have been selected (regional development, culture and arts, volunteer service).
- The city has proposed creating a shuttle bus exclusively for foreign tourists between Yangyang Airport and Sokcho. It is not yet confirmed, so if you plan to use the airport you should still check the existing route timetables.
Here is how to spend today
- 05:00–06:05 — Move to a sunrise spot. With 0.3 m waves and a few clouds, conditions are good.
- 07:00 — Breakfast at 학사평 순두부촌. Most places open at 7, and some close early when they run out of ingredients.
- 08:00–09:00 — Head into Seorak-dong. Past this window, both parking and the roads change.
- 09:00–10:16 — The plant garden opens; low tide. Walking the rocky shore is safest around this time.
- Before 13:00 or after 18:00 — Depart for home. Avoid 2 to 4 p.m.
- 18:37 — Sunset. The Cheongchoho loop trail is prettier after the sun goes down.
The water temperature, which was above 24°C a few days ago, has come down to 23.7°C today. It is still warm enough to feel pleasant if you go in, but all of Sokcho's swimming beaches have closed for the season, so there are no lifeguards. Today is a Sunday where it makes sense in every way to just look at the sea and move your body toward the mountains.
