Hello, this is 속초어때 (Sokcho Eottae). As of 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, the temperature in Sokcho (속초) is 21°C. There are a few clouds, but the chance of rain is 2%; the daytime high reached 25°C and the low is 19°C. The sea is at 0.3 m wave height with a water temperature of 23.8°C, so it is fair to say it is almost completely still. It would be hard to find a better Saturday night in Sokcho in mid-September.
So today we have prepared a slightly different story. The better the weather on a weekend, the more people crowd into Sokcho, and when crowds gather, someone among them is bound to get hurt or fall ill. Right now six places are registering as 'very congested': 테라크랩팜 (Terra Crab Farm), 테디베어팜 (Teddy Bear Farm), 한화리조트 설악 워터피아 (Hanwha Resort Seorak Waterpia), Sokcho Port (속초항), Cheongchoho (청초호), and 속초 얼라이브 하트 (Sokcho Alive Heart). The three access roads — Misiryeong-ro (미시령로, toward Seoul), Donghae-daero (동해대로, coast and downtown) and Seoraksan-ro (설악산로, toward Seoraksan (설악산)) — are all moving slowly. Looking at these numbers to find 'where is less crowded' is worth doing, but where to go when you suddenly need a hospital at 9 p.m. is something that will never come to mind in that moment unless you know it in advance.
Two places in Sokcho have their lights on 24 hours tonight
There are two emergency rooms in downtown Sokcho you can go to directly in the middle of the night.
- 강원특별자치도 속초의료원 (Gangwon State Sokcho Medical Center) — Emergency Medical Center, 1st floor of the main building, 3 Yeongnanghoban-gil (영랑호반길 3), Sokcho. Direct ER line 033-630-6190. It returned to 24-hour operation seven days a week on April 1, 2025, and emergency medicine specialists are on site at all times.
- 속초보광병원 (Sokcho Bogwang Hospital) — 11 Jungang-ro (중앙로 11), Gyo-dong, Sokcho. Main line 033-639-8500, ER 033-639-8988~9. A dedicated emergency physician is on duty 24 hours, and orthopedic and general-surgery emergency operations are covered 365 days a year.
The fact that the two are in quite different locations actually matters. 속초의료원 is over on the Yeongnangho (영랑호) side, while 속초보광병원 is toward Jungang-ro downtown. On a night like tonight, when Donghae-daero and Misiryeong-ro are moving slowly, 'the closer one' is 'the faster one'. If you have booked a place to stay, the surest thing is to search for both on your map app right now and save them to your favorites. Ten minutes lost on the road changes the outcome.
Let us add a few practical tips.
- For visible trauma such as a fall, a fracture, or a deep cut, the hospital with an orthopedic and general-surgery emergency operating system running at all times is the better choice.
- For chest pain, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or weakness on one side, do not drive there yourself — call 119 first. With heart attacks and strokes, treatment during transport and the hospital's advance preparation are what decide survival.
- When going straight to an ER, it is better to call the numbers above before you leave and let them know your situation first. Waiting conditions at a Saturday-night ER change constantly.
- If you are taking any medication, bring the medicine envelope or a photo of the prescription with you. At an ER away from home, confirming your medical history is the step that takes the longest.
What last month's Goseong accident showed about the real transport route out of Sokcho
A headline appeared in Sokcho news this week: 'Short-staffed 속초의료원 gives emergency care to man in his 60s buried in soil, then transfers him by helicopter.' Following the actual incident shows exactly what path a critically injured patient in Sokcho ends up taking.
On August 19, a man in his 60s was buried under soil at a waterworks construction site in Goseong-gun (고성군). The 119 paramedics judged it to be severe trauma, but instead of waiting for a helicopter at the scene they first moved the patient to 속초의료원 for emergency treatment and imaging. Once a pelvic fracture was confirmed, he was then flown by helicopter to the regional trauma center at 의정부성모병원 (Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital) in Gyeonggi (경기), where he received intensive care. This is Gangwon State's approach of using five medical centers — Wonju, Gangneung, Sokcho, Samcheok and Yeongwol — as first-line treatment facilities, 'treat first, transfer later'.
There are two realities to read here. One is that if you are badly injured in Sokcho, your definitive treatment may take place outside the Gangwon region; the other is that, because of this, where you spend the first 30 minutes is decisive. If an accident happens somewhere hard to reach, such as Seoraksan or the rocky shore along the coast, those 30 minutes get even shorter. On a night like tonight, when all three access roads are moving slowly, ambulances have to travel the same roads. If you are planning a hike or night fishing, we recommend turning on location sharing and telling someone in your party your expected time.
If your child has a fever at night — Sokcho has no 달빛어린이병원
This is the situation visitors with children run into most often. Gangwon State has three 달빛어린이병원 (Dalbit Children's Hospital) locations — Chuncheon, Wonju and Gangneung, and one public late-night children's hospital, in Wonju. Sokcho has no 달빛어린이병원 designation. That means if your child develops a fever at night, the ER effectively becomes the first option.
One thing did change this year, though. Gangwon State announced last April that three institutions — 속초의료원, 근로복지공단 태백병원 (Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service Taebaek Hospital) and 영월의료원 (Yeongwol Medical Center) — had been selected for the Ministry of Health and Welfare's 2026 'fostering of pediatric and holiday care providers in underserved areas' program. Each institution receives 120 million KRW a year (50% national funds, 50% local funds) to run pediatric night and holiday care suited to local conditions. 속초의료원 is included, but because operating hours are set through consultation with the local government, the days and time slots are not in a fixed form. If your child needs care, the fastest thing is to call the 속초의료원 ER at 033-630-6190 first, even at night, and check whether pediatric care is available.
Pharmacies are trickier. It is hard to say that Sokcho has a permanently designated public late-night pharmacy that is reliably open after 10 p.m. There are two alternatives: looking up pharmacies currently open on the holiday on-duty pharmacy site (pharm114.or.kr) or the emergency medical portal E-Gen (e-gen.or.kr), and using convenience stores that carry the 13 designated household safety medicines such as fever reducers, digestive aids and adhesive bandages. If you are traveling with a child, it is far better to start out with fever medicine already in your room.
A wave height of 0.3 m does not automatically mean 'safe'
The sea really is calm today. At 0.3 m waves and a water temperature of 23.8°C, the conditions make you want to get in. But all of Sokcho's swimming beaches have closed for the season, the last being 등대해수욕장 (Deungdae Beach) on August 30. There are no lifeguards on the beaches now. It means entering the water is not a managed activity.
Looking at tonight's conditions a little more specifically:
- Low tide at 22:19 (18 cm) — the water pulls back the furthest around 10:20 p.m. This is the time when rocks and tetrapods that are normally submerged become exposed and people walk out further.
- Moonset at 18:59 — today the moon sets right after sunset (18:39). With almost no moonlight, the stars show well, but the breakwaters and rocks are far darker than you would expect.
- The East Sea (동해) has a small tidal range, so today too the difference between high and low tide is in the 20–40 cm range. The risk of being cut off by an incoming tide is lower than on the West Sea, but instead slipping and falling account for most accidents.
If an accident happens along the shore, the maritime emergency number 122 has already been merged into 119, so report it to 119. When you call, reading out the number on the nearest breakwater or the wording on a nearby sign rather than a place name is far more precise for the rescue team. This is exactly why 속초어때 posts wave height and water temperature together every day. A calm day is not a good day to get in the water; it is the day the most people go down to the water's edge.
Chuseok holiday D-12: preparations you can finish tonight
This year Chuseok falls on Friday, September 25, and the holiday runs from Thursday, September 24 to Saturday, September 26. There are 12 days left until it starts. Sokcho is a city whose population multiplies every holiday, so for those three days the medical environment is completely different from usual.
- Get your chronic-condition medication prescribed now. In the week right before the holiday, appointments at local clinics pile up. Securing enough blood-pressure, diabetes and thyroid medication to last past the holiday is the surest preparation.
- The list of hospitals and pharmacies open during the holiday is released right before the holiday. You can check the emergency medical portal E-Gen, notices from the Sokcho Public Health Center, and the 129 Health and Welfare Call Center. Searching now will not turn up a confirmed list yet, so check again around September 22.
- Before you head home for the holiday or travel, save the two emergency rooms near your accommodation on your map. They are 속초의료원 (3 Yeongnanghoban-gil) and 속초보광병원 (11 Jungang-ro), listed above.
- During the holiday the three access roads are far more congested than today. If a situation arises where you need to get to a hospital, give priority to the route with less congestion over the shortest distance your navigation suggests.
Tomorrow, Sunday, September 13: a preview of Sokcho
Tomorrow sunrise is at 06:05 and sunset at 18:37. Sunrise is one minute later and sunset two minutes earlier than today. The tide is at 10-mul (10물), with high tides at 04:03 and 16:18 and low tides at 10:16 and 22:46. The water pulls back the most around 10 a.m., so that is a good time for a beach walk or looking at shellfish.
On Sunday afternoon, traffic heading back to the city piles onto Donghae-daero and Misiryeong-ro. Considering that all three roads are already moving slowly tonight, for the Seoul direction it is better to leave before lunch or to allow yourself extra time late in the evening. Tomorrow's temperature and precipitation figures are updated hourly in the Korea Meteorological Administration forecast, so we recommend checking once more right before you set out.
