For the past few weeks we have brought you news of rain and swells every weekend, but this Saturday you should be fine getting around without an umbrella.
When the weather is nice, most people think of the sea first, but today Sokcho also has cultural events you can enjoy with no admission fee. At 속초문화예술회관 (Sokcho Munhwa Yesul Hoegwan) in Yeongnang-dong (영랑동), a free violin concert and a children's art exhibition are taking place in the same building on the same day, and at 2 p.m. there is also a talk by a poet at a bookstore in Jungang-dong (중앙동). We have put together how best to plan your route today, along with weather, sea, and traffic information.
Today's Sokcho Weather and Sea, by the Numbers First

With a daytime high of 25°C, walking around even at midday is comfortable, and once the sun sets the temperature soon drops below 20°C. If you plan to stay out until evening, bring a light jacket. With waves at 0.4 m, the sea off Sokcho looks almost like a lake. However, all of Sokcho's beaches have closed for the season, with Deungdae Beach (등대해수욕장) the last to close on August 30. As there are no lifeguards, please refrain from going into the water; we recommend enjoying the sea only through beach walks and photos.
속초문화예술회관 Hosts Two Performances Today
At 속초문화예술회관 (155 Beonyeong-ro (번영로 155), Sokcho-si, Yeongnang-dong), two performances are being held today in separate spaces.
- ARKO Violin Ensemble Regular Concert: Small Hall, all seats free. This concert is held as part of the 2026 Sokcho Culture and Arts Support Program.
- SMP (Sokcho Music Hall) ‘Passionate Attack Concert’: Main Performance Hall. A stage by a local music group.
For both performances, the start times and the admission fee for the SMP concert could not be confirmed in publicly available information. To avoid a wasted trip, be sure to check the performance schedule on the 속초문화예술회관 website before you set out. Free performances usually admit on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you are going as a family, it is better to arrive a little early.
Local performances like these are a particularly good option for travelers. Waits at Sokcho's famous restaurants on weekends often exceed an hour, but at a concert hall you can walk in without a reservation and sit and rest for an hour or so. If you have children with you, a smaller performance like the violin ensemble in the Small Hall is easy to enjoy without pressure.
In the Same Building's Exhibition Room, the ‘Yeongnangho (영랑호) Chilseok Culture Festival Exhibition’ Starts Today
An exhibition that is good to drop by before or after the performances also begins today. The Yeongnangho Chilseok Culture Festival Exhibition runs for five days, from September 12 to 16, in the center's exhibition room. It shows Sokcho through paintings by local children.
Yeongnangho Lake, the sea, and neighborhood alleys as seen through children's eyes are quite different from those in tourist brochures. For travelers, it is a chance to glimpse how people here see Sokcho, and for residents, there is the fun of looking for paintings by their own children or their neighbors' children. The exhibition room is only about 220㎡, divided with movable partitions, so even a leisurely look around takes just 20 to 30 minutes.
Since the center is in Yeongnang-dong, it is also a good starting point for walking toward Yeongnangho Lake after seeing the exhibition. For reference, Sokcho's real-time congestion data currently shows the nearby 신세계영랑호리조트 (Shinsegae Yeongnangho Resort) as ‘very crowded’ and Cheongchoho Lake (청초호) as ‘crowded’. With Saturday overnight guests pouring in, parking lots around the lake may be busy, so we recommend leaving your car in the center's parking lot and getting around on foot.
2 p.m.: A Talk by Poet Na Hee-duk at 문우당서림 (Munudang Seorim)
In the afternoon, you might also head over to Jungang-dong. As part of the ‘Humanities Hour That Awakens Me’ program run by the Sokcho Education and Culture Center, poet Na Hee-duk will give a talk today on the theme ‘Poetry, Matter, and Life’ at 2 p.m. on the 2nd floor of 문우당서림.

Since advance registration for this talk has already closed, if you were unable to sign up, call first to check whether on-site attendance is possible. Even if you don't attend the talk, 문우당서림 is worth a visit in its own right. It is a few minutes' walk from 속초관광수산시장 (Sokcho Gwangwang Susan Sijang), so a course of shopping at the market in the morning, having lunch, and then stopping by the bookstore flows naturally. Because the Education and Culture Center is constructing a new building, it is continuing its talks together with local bookstores.
Planning Today's Route, Including Traffic and Tides
All three main roads into Sokcho are currently estimated to be moving slowly.
- Misiryeong-ro (미시령로, toward Seoul): slow
- Donghae-daero (동해대로, coast/downtown): slow
- Seoraksan-ro (설악산로, toward Seorak): slow
Among tourist spots, Sinheungsa Temple (신흥사) at Seoraksan (설악산), Oeongchi Port (외옹치항), 켄싱턴호텔 설악 (Kensington Hotel Seorak), and 마레몬스 호텔 (Maremons Hotel) are ‘crowded’. As it is a clear Saturday, cars are likely to flock to Seorak-dong (설악동) and the coast. Here is the order 속초어때 recommends.
- Morning: Around low tide at 09:32, the water recedes and the beaches widen. This is the best time for a walk on the sand.
- Lunch to 2 p.m.: Have lunch around 중앙시장 (Jungang Sijang) and then move on to 문우당서림.
- Afternoon: See the exhibition at the arts center in Yeongnang-dong and go in in time for the performance. Taking downtown roads instead of the coastal road lets you avoid some of the slow stretches.
- Evening: Sunset at 18:39. The sunset glow is lovely around Cheongchoho Lake or Yeongnangho Lake, and with high tide at 15:33, water levels in the lakes and harbor are relatively high around this time.
If you are returning the same day, keep Sunday afternoon's return traffic in mind and leave plenty of time when setting your departure. Toward evening, slow traffic may stretch longer on both Misiryeong-ro and Donghae-daero.
