Hello, this is 속초어때 (Sokcho Eottae). As of 4 p.m. on Monday, August 24, Sokcho is at 32°C under clear skies. Right up through yesterday it was all talk of beach closings, but a day later it is more accurate to say that summer in Sokcho has not ended so much as moved seats from where it was sitting. Of the four places registering as Very Congested in Sokcho this afternoon, three are water play facilities at resorts and hotels, and three of the roads coming into the city are congested even though it is a Monday. We will go through why this is happening, and what those of you currently in Sokcho and those heading to Sokcho this evening should each keep in mind.
Sokcho at 4 p.m.: 32°C, and the Heat Wave Advisory Is Still Alive
The current temperature is 32°C, with a high of 33°C and a low of 25°C today, and an 8% chance of rain. Checking the Korea Meteorological Administration advisory status, a heat wave advisory is in effect for the Sokcho lowlands and the Sokcho mountainous areas. Just below, the Gangneung (강릉) lowlands, the Donghae (동해) lowlands and mountains, and the Samcheok (삼척) lowlands and mountains are under a heat wave warning, one level higher. The reason Sokcho sits one notch lower even on the same East Coast is simple. The distance from Seoraksan (설악산) to the sea is short in Sokcho, so the sea breeze tends to come in relatively early during the day, and on many days the afternoon high climbs 1-2°C less than in the coastal cities to the south.
That said, a low of 25°C means another tropical night tonight. An 8% chance of rain is effectively low enough to set aside any worry about rain, so feel free to make outdoor plans. Note, though, that sunset today is at 19:08. Compared with early August, the sun now sets more than 20 minutes earlier, so if you planned sunset photos or a walk and move on your old sense of timing, you will end up looking at a sea that has already gone dark. For reference, sunrise today was at 05:48.
- 12:00-16:00: the stretch with the strongest direct sun. Avoid this window at places with long outdoor queues.
- 16:00-18:00: the sea breeze comes in and the felt temperature drops sharply. Good for a beach walk or a look around the harbor.
- After 19:00: it gets dark rapidly right after sunset. Plan your route around places with lighting.
The Sea Is Closed, but the Water Is 26.9°C - the Warmest of This Summer
Right now the water temperature off Sokcho is 26.9°C and the wave height is 0.2 m. At 0.2 m the sea is closer to a big lake than to open water, and 26.9°C ranks among the warmest readings of the entire summer. And yet Sokcho Beach (속초해수욕장), Oeongchi Beach (외옹치해수욕장), and Cheongho Beach (청호해수욕장) closed yesterday, August 23. This irony of shutting down when the water is at its best is a scene that repeats every year at East Coast beaches.
Instead, Deungdae Beach is running a one-week extension through August 30. That is seven days including today, with six days left until it closes. The reason Deungdae Beach was chosen for the extension is clear as well. The water is relatively shallow and the waves are usually calm, so families make up a high share of its visitors, which makes it comparatively easy to manage with lifeguards assigned. The usual hours for entering the water are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and water safety personnel are stationed there during the extension period as well.
There is one point we want to make sure to flag here. The City of Sokcho has said that it will keep water safety personnel at the three closed beaches as well, continuing patrols and safety guidance. But this is not the system used during the open season, with staff stationed in watchtowers on standby for rescues; it is more a matter of making rounds and stopping risky behavior. In other words, someone standing on a closed beach does not mean the safety nets and rescue standby are still in place. If you intend to get in the water, Deungdae Beach is the right call today.
Today the tide stage is 4-mul, high tide was at 11:50 (+43 cm) and low tide at 19:53 (-21 cm). The East Coast does not have a large tidal range, so the tide does not govern your schedule, but it is worth remembering that low tide falls 45 minutes after sunset. For anyone thinking of going down onto the shore rocks, that combination means walking on rock left exposed by the outgoing water after dark, so we do not recommend a walk on the coastal rocks this evening.
All Three Very Congested Spots Are Water Play Facilities
Sokcho congestion readings this afternoon show the flow at a glance. 한화리조트 설악 워터피아 (Hanwha Resort Seorak Waterpia), 켄싱턴호텔 설악 (Kensington Hotel Seorak), and the Daepohang (대포항) Observatory are Very Congested, while 더케이설악산 가족호텔 (The-K Seoraksan Family Hotel), 속초관광수산시장 (Sokcho Gwangwang Susan Sijang, formerly 중앙시장 / Jungang Sijang), and Cheongchoho (청초호) are Congested. Of these, 워터피아, 켄싱턴호텔 설악, and 더케이설악산 가족호텔 are all lodging and leisure facilities equipped with water play amenities.
Three reasons overlapped. First, with three beaches closing yesterday, there are fewer places to go. Second, in 32°C weather under a heat wave advisory, a place where you can stay submerged in water is overwhelmingly better than a shadeless stretch of sand. Third, the last week of August is the final vacation stretch before school starts, so Monday does not make things quieter. It is a pattern 속초어때 has confirmed by looking at congestion figures every day: from the fourth week of August, the gap between weekdays and weekends narrows noticeably.
- If you are heading to a water park at this hour, start by checking the remaining operating time. Late-afternoon entry often overlaps with the wave pool closing time.
- The wait to get into the parking lot is the biggest bottleneck. If you are with a group, having everyone get out at the main gate to handle ticketing while only the driver parks saves 20-30 minutes.
- During Very Congested hours, the lines for lockers and tube rentals are longer than the entry line. You are better off bringing your own towel and waterproof pouch.
- It is the kind of weather where dehydration comes on easily after water play. Take in fluids every 30 minutes even while you are in the water.
Daepohang Observatory and the Fishery Market: How to Dodge the Busy Hours
That Daepohang Observatory is Very Congested comes down largely to timing. With sunset at 19:08, the next couple of hours land exactly on the busiest stretch of the day. If your goal is photos of the sea, it is better to claim a spot early in the 16:00 hour, or conversely to aim for after 19:30, once the crowd has thinned. If you plan to eat raw fish, arriving around 17:00, before the dinner peak begins, is the easiest way to avoid a wait.
속초관광수산시장 is Congested. The walking environment at this market has clearly improved since the car-free street took hold, but flipped around, that means driving right up to the market's doorstep no longer works. Plan on parking at a nearby public lot and walking 5-10 minutes as the default. Cheongchoho is also registering as Congested, but its walking path is long, so the density feels lower. Around 19:00, as the sun goes down, the Cheongchoho waterside path is the coolest walking course in Sokcho on a day like today.
Three Access Roads Congested at Once - How to Move This Evening
Right now Misiryeong-ro (미시령로, toward Seoul), Donghae-daero (동해대로, coast and downtown), and Seoraksan-ro (설악산로, toward Seorak) are all estimated to be congested. It is not common for all three axes to be blocked together at 4 p.m. on a Monday. It appears to be the result of last-week-of-August lodging movement, vehicles converging on indoor facilities to escape the heat, and check-in hours in the resort-dense area toward Seorak all overlapping at once.
- Departing toward Seoul (서울): leaving now is the worst option. Having dinner in Sokcho and getting onto Misiryeong-ro after 20:00 feels far better.
- Heading toward Seorak: 15:00-18:00, when resort check-ins pile up, is the peak. If you have time to spare, eat dinner downtown first and head in afterward.
- Short trips downtown: when Donghae-daero is blocked, there are many stretches in downtown Sokcho where walking or cycling is faster than driving. That is especially true around Cheongchoho.
This Week in Sokcho: News Worth Keeping in Mind
Finally, here are a few items currently underway in Sokcho. Some of it is more useful to residents than to travelers.
- Recruitment of participating shops for the second season of 마실씨네 (Masil Cine) closes tomorrow. It is open to restaurants and cafés with a business location in Sokcho that have space for 10 or more people, and applications run until 6 p.m. on August 25. It takes place four times in total from October through December, and there is no participation fee. It is a program that turns a neighborhood shop into a movie theater for one evening, so it is not a bad opportunity for building a regular clientele.
- Sokcho Municipal Museum (속초시립박물관) recorded 26,000 visitors this summer, up 32% from last year. It is the result of indoor cultural facilities being rediscovered as summer retreats as the heat wave has dragged on. If you are looking for somewhere to go with a child on a 32°C day like today, it is a strong candidate.
- 아트박스 (Art Box), the children's cultural performance run by the Sokcho Culture and Tourism Foundation (속초문화관광재단), kept up a string of sellouts all through August. It is best to check the foundation's announcements in advance for information on the next session.
- 워터밤 속초 (Waterbomb Sokcho) finished its fourth consecutive year without a safety incident. With the crowds that filled the Seorakdong (설악동) area last weekend now gone, traffic in that area has returned to normal today.
- 450,000 beachgoers visited Sokcho beaches over the past month. It is a number that shows a beach does not empty out just because it has closed.
Sokcho This Evening: One Recommended Route
Putting it together, this order is the most comfortable for tonight. Stay indoors out of the heat from now until 17:30, then come out to Deungdae Beach or the Cheongchoho waterside between 17:30 and 19:00 and take in the sea breeze. After watching the 19:08 sunset, have dinner after 19:30, once the crowd at Daepohang Observatory has thinned; if you are heading back to Seoul, get onto Misiryeong-ro after 20:00. A tropical night is forecast, so be generous with your lodging's cooling and your water. And if you really want to get in the water: six days from today, on August 30, the beaches where you can officially enter the water in Sokcho disappear entirely. Deungdae Beach, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. - these conditions are this summer's last chance.
