The first thing that stands out here is the high of 25 degrees and the low of 22 - a daily range of only 3 degrees. That means thick cloud and humid air will sit over the area all day, and on days like this the sun does not come out, so it is hard to judge how it will feel. Come in short sleeves and the sea breeze feels chilly; put on a jacket and the humidity feels stuffy. A single thin windbreaker is the right answer for this weather.
One of today's six busiest spots sits at 1,708m above sea level
Look at the crowding list and five of them are the usual names. The sundubu village, 부엉이전시관, Cheongchoho, Sokcho Beach, 동명항. But the sixth is Daecheongbong on Seoraksan. It is a name that rarely came up during the midsummer peak season, and there is a reason. This is the first Sunday in September after the heat wave has passed, and it comes before the autumn foliage crowds arrive, so the shelters and parking lots still have room. In fact, this year's first foliage on Seoraksan is expected between late September and early October. In other words, those climbing Daecheongbong today are not going to see the foliage; they are going to catch the last quiet weekend before it.
If you are heading to Daecheongbong, you need to watch two clocks today
The first clock is the national park's Designated Entry Time System (입산시간지정제). Under the summer-season rules that run from April through October, the Osaek (오색) and Hangyeryeong (한계령) courses in southern Seorak, which lead up to Daecheongbong, allow entry only between 03:00 and 12:00. Past 12:00, you will be turned back at the trailhead. The 설악동 소공원 (Seorakdong Sogongwon) and 비선대 (Biseondae) sections are closed to hikers from sunset until two hours before sunrise the next day.
The second clock is the weather. Rain is forecast to spread across the Gangwon east coast after noon today. As it happens, the entry cutoff time and the start of the rain overlap. So for Daecheongbong today, it is not ‘you can enter until 12:00’ but rather ‘you need to already be well up the mountain before 12:00’.
- From the Osaek Visitor Support Center to Daecheongbong is about 5km one way - short, but a steep climb of continuous stairs, so it usually takes around 4 hours.
- For a round trip you should allow 8 hours or more including breaks, and getting wet in the rain like today will make the descent even slower.
- Sunset is at 18:48, and it gets dark inside the forest about an hour earlier than that. If you set off after 8 a.m., a headlamp is not optional but essential.
- If you plan to stay a while at the summit, it is better to start early in the morning. Today's rain is on the order of 5-10mm, so it is not a downpour, but conditions will turn worse as the day goes on.
On the mountain, the real hazards are the fog and wind, not the rain
Today dense fog with visibility under 200m is forecast for the Gangwon mountains, along with the possibility of strong winds with gusts of 15m per second (55km/h) or more. A cumulative 5-10mm of rain is an amount a single rain poncho can handle, but fog and wind are a different matter. When visibility on a ridge drops below 200m, it is easy to miss signposts at junctions, and wet rocks and deck stairs will catch you out on the way down. Add a 15m-per-second wind hitting a wet body and your temperature drops fast, even in September.
So what you need for a hike today is not an umbrella but a rain poncho, a spare top, dry socks, and gloves. An umbrella is actually dangerous on a windy ridge. And because the wind is strong enough to shake outdoor fixtures, those of you in town should also take a look around your balcony plants and shop signs.
The sea is 24.3 degrees, but there is nowhere you can go in today
Water temperature 24.3 degrees, wave height 1.1m. Going by the numbers alone, it looks like you could still swim. But every designated beach in Sokcho has finished its operating season. There are no lifeguards on the sand now, and no buoys marking the swimming zones. The recent death of a person in their 30s while snorkeling at an undesignated beach in Sokcho falls in the same context. Accidents happen not inside a supervised beach, but outside it, where no one is watching.
Today's tide is 2-mul, so the tidal range is not large. High tide is 42cm at 09:10 and low tide is 16cm at 17:59, so the width of the rocky shore will not change dramatically. That said, walking on wet breakwaters and shoreline rocks during a rainy afternoon is dangerous in itself. I suggest treating the sea today as something to look at only. Paths with decking, such as 외옹치 바다향기로 (Oeongchi Badahyanggi-ro) or 영금정 (Yeonggeumjeong), are far safer on a day like this.
This afternoon, 4,827 people will leave Sokcho all at once
The 19th Gangwon School Sports Club Festival (강원학교스포츠클럽축제), which opened yesterday, reaches its second and final day today. Students numbering 4,827 from 272 schools are taking part, and while some events were split off to Chuncheon and Samcheok, the center of it is Sokcho. The problem is that the time these people leave collides head-on with the Sunday return-to-Seoul rush.
Even now at 5 a.m., all three of Misiryeong-ro, Donghae-daero, and Seoraksan-ro are showing slow-moving traffic. Add chartered buses all moving at once after the event ends, plus the rain, and the afternoon congestion is likely to last longer than a typical Sunday.
- If you are leaving Sokcho it is better to finish lunch before 12:00 and set off before 2 p.m., or else push it back to after 7 p.m. entirely. 15:00 to 17:00 is the worst window.
- If you are coming into Sokcho today the reverse may apply, and an afternoon approach could be smooth. However, on the Misiryeong section, visibility drops sharply when rain and fog come together, so please slow down.
- For residents bus movements will be concentrated in the afternoon around the venue and along the downtown stretch of Donghae-daero. It will be easier to take care of urgent errands in the morning.
A route with a roof for a rainy afternoon
If the rain starts at noon, moving your afternoon plans indoors is the realistic choice. Among the spots on today's very crowded list, about the only one where you can get out of the rain is 부엉이전시관(해피아울하우스). It is already busy, so expect the wait to grow even longer around midday when the rain sets in properly.
An alternative is 속초관광수산시장 (Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market). With the car-free street in operation, vehicle traffic has dropped and it is easier to walk, and the inner market has a continuous roof, so you can browse for quite a while with your umbrella folded. For a meal, 동명동 생선구이 골목 (Dongmyeong-dong Grilled Fish Alley) is a solid choice. It has been featured on TV recently, so there are waits at midday on weekends - I recommend getting a seat around 11:30. The Haksapyeong sundubu village has been very crowded since before dawn, so at the lunch peak you should be prepared to wait 30 minutes or more. Some plans do not have to happen today
If you are disappointed about what the rain kept you from doing today, September in Sokcho is really only just beginning. Performance and exhibition programs continue throughout September, and the 61st 설악문화제 (Seorak Cultural Festival) runs from October 2 to 4 around the Expo Lawn Plaza and 설악로데오거리 (Seorak Rodeo Street). The first foliage on Seoraksan is also expected between late September and early October, so if you want to see Daecheongbong properly, 3 to 4 weeks from now is a far better choice. Rather than forcing your way onto the ridge today, this is a day when shifting the date makes for a better trip.
