Compared with early last week, when waves were hovering above 2 m and pounding the breakwater, it has clearly settled down.
But there's something you absolutely must know here. Sokcho's swimming beaches all closed for the season at the end of last month. Deungdae Beach (등대해수욕장), the last one still open, closed on August 30. No matter how warm the water is now, it means this is a sea with no lifeguards on duty.
This is exactly the point where accidents happen every year at this time. The water is warm and the waves are low, so it becomes 'let's just dip our feet for a moment,' and that leads to going in waist-deep. At a closed beach there's no one watching for rip currents and no one to throw you a tube. Today's sea is best used only as a sea to look at and walk beside. Daepo Port is also at the hour when fishing boats preparing for early-morning operations and vehicles related to the fish auction are already starting to move.
Here's the practical way to read it. A place that's already congested before dawn gets more congested during the day. If you're planning on the raw fish center or the observatory over by Daepo Port today, it's far more comfortable to shift to the 10 a.m. hour or after 3 p.m., avoiding the lunch peak (12-2 p.m.).
As for access routes, all three — Misiryeong-ro (미시령로, toward Seoul), Donghae-daero (동해대로, coast and downtown), and Seoraksan-ro (설악산로, toward Seorak) — are flowing smoothly. Since it's a weekday Tuesday, there shouldn't be sections with major backups during the day either, but once the rain starts, the perceived speed on the coastal stretch of Donghae-daero drops noticeably. I'd suggest allowing an extra 15 minutes.

Yesterday, September 14, Sokcho City held a briefing on comprehensive measures for the Chuseok holiday in the city hall digital situation room and reviewed 24 tasks across 5 areas. During the holiday, a comprehensive situation room made up of 17 response teams will operate, and among them 4 teams — disaster safety, water supply, sewerage, and public facility management — will work 24 hours a day.
Narrowing it to what travelers and people returning home will actually feel:
- Parking — City Hall and 4 nearby parking lots, 263 spaces in total, will be opened. If you've ever circled and circled looking for downtown parking over a holiday, this is a card worth remembering.
- Medical care — An emergency care situation room will operate, and information on hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies open during the holiday will be provided.
