The daytime high is 25 degrees and the low 22, and the chance of precipitation is set at 100%, so even with clear skies right now there's a good chance rain will pass through overnight. The sea is relatively calm, with a water temperature of 24.3 degrees and waves of 1.2m.
But the congestion map at this hour looks a little unfamiliar. Sokcho Beach, Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market, the Seoraksan (설악산) cable car, Yeonggeumjeong and the Lighthouse Observatory, Daepohang, and Abai Village — all six are marked congested, and all three access roads are moving slowly: Misiryeong-ro (toward Seoul), Donghae-daero (coast and downtown), and Seoraksan-ro (toward Seorak). Three roads slowing at the same time at 11 p.m. on a Sunday means the people who came in today still haven't all made it out. If you're setting off now, it's best to allow at least an extra 20 to 30 minutes in the Misiryeong direction.
What's left where summer ended is 'eighteen days from now'
The beaches have already closed, and the swimming season wrapped up last month. The next big block on Sokcho's calendar is Chuseok. In 2026, Chuseok falls on Friday, September 25, with the official holiday running from Thursday the 24th through Saturday the 26th, and it naturally extends to four days through Sunday the 27th. As of tonight, that's exactly 18 days away.
And over these 18 days, the most tangible benefit in Sokcho isn't at the sea or in the mountains — it's in your phone. It only takes five minutes tonight, so let's cover it first.
Sokcho Love Gift Certificate at 15%, up to 105,000 KRW per person
Since 9 a.m. on September 1, the city of Sokcho has been running a 'Chuseok Holiday Special Discount Sale of Sokcho Love Gift Certificates' totaling 6 billion KRW. The key point is that two things went up at once.
- Discount rate: from 10% → 15%
- Monthly purchase limit per person: from 500,000 KRW → 700,000 KRW
- Max out the limit and your effective savings reach up to 105,000 KRW
- Purchase and payment through the mobile app '지역상품권 chak' (Jiyeok Sangpumgwon chak)
- Usable at 4,505 affiliated merchants across the city, including traditional markets and neighborhood shopping districts
What's easy to miss here is the phrase 'monthly limit.' This limit is based on the single month of September, so if you don't use it in September, that portion simply disappears. In particular, if you're planning to do your Chuseok shopping after the 24th, you should load the gift certificates before then. It's also a sale within a fixed budget, so availability changes from moment to moment in the app. Install the app tonight and just check whether any remains, and you won't have to scramble again tomorrow morning.
It's a good deal for travelers too. The Sokcho Love Gift Certificate isn't limited to residents — anyone with the app can buy it, and the merchant network is broad, covering raw fish centers, dried seafood shops, cafés, and gas stations. If you plan to spend 300,000 KRW over a two-day, one-night trip, that alone takes 45,000 KRW off — bigger than most accommodation discount coupons.
Online it's 30% - the Sokcho Mall coupon
There's also an option for those who can't make it to Sokcho, or who only need holiday gifts. Sokcho Mall, the city of Sokcho's flagship online shopping mall, is issuing a 30% discount coupon good on all products for Chuseok.

To sum up: offline is 15%, online is 30%. For things you're 'going to buy anyway,' like holiday gift sets, Sokcho Mall is the better bet; for spending on the ground — meals, raw fish, coffee — the gift certificate wins. The trick isn't stacking the two, it's dividing them by purpose.
The market now sells by delivery too
This is about Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market, which is marked 'congested' again tonight. Results from the 'Our Neighborhood's Real Market - Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market' promotion that Coupang Eats ran from July 16 to August 17 were released on the 1st, and sales at participating stores rose 87% compared with the same period the previous month. Some stores saw weekly sales jump as much as 220% week over week, and one live raw fish specialty shop was cited as an example.
More important than the numbers is what this means for travelers. When the market is as packed as it is now, it means there's a way to get market food delivered to your accommodation without circling the parking lot three times to get in. On days when the roads around the market are jammed at dinnertime, and your lodging is within the market's radius, opening a delivery app first is one option. Even with Sokcho Eottae watching congestion every hour, the answer in the end is one of two things: avoid it, or buy it differently.

Today's waves were 1.2m, but tomorrow's forecast goes up to 2.5m. There are stretches where the northeasterly wind blows at up to 13 m/s, conditions in which water can wash over breakwaters and rocky shores. When taking photos at Yeonggeumjeong or along the Oeongchi coastal path, please avoid stepping outside the railings.
The water temperature is 24.3 degrees, so it isn't cold yet. The problem is that this in-between temperature is exactly what tempts people into the water. All the beaches have closed, so safety managers and lifeguards are no longer stationed there, and designated swimming zones aren't maintained. On August 21, a person in their 30s died while snorkeling at a non-designated beach near Jangsahang, and over the past four years there have been 43 casualties at non-designated beaches on the East Coast alone. That's more than eight times the number of deaths at official beaches over the same period. It's more accurate to think of the sea after closing not as 'a quiet sea because there's no one around' but as 'a sea where no one will see it if something happens.'

Here's an alternative for a night with a 100% chance of rain. The September program at the Sokcho Culture & Arts Center is fairly packed.

For exhibitions, the Yeongnangho Chilseok Culture Festival exhibition runs September 12–16, the 'Waves, Light, Harmony of Reflections' photo exhibition from the 17th to the 22nd, and the Hojeong Jo Jeong-seung retrospective from the 29th through October 4, all in the exhibition hall. With two free performances in the mix, it's a good option for a rainy weekend when there's nowhere obvious to take the kids. The Yeongnangho pontoon bridge: the process is now moving
On the 1st, the Sokcho City Council approved a supplementary budget bill including 700 million KRW for the removal of the Yeongnangho (영랑호) pontoon bridge. The 400m bridge, which opened in November 2021, cost about 2.23 billion KRW to build, and now that the budget is secured, removal procedures will begin following steps such as a detailed design service. It won't be blocked off tomorrow, but that 400m walk across the water will disappear one day. If you have plans to stroll around Yeongnangho within September, we recommend not putting it off. As it happens, the Yeongnangho Chilseok Culture Festival exhibition also opens in the center's exhibition hall starting on the 12th.

- Right now: if you're heading home, allow 20–30 minutes extra for slow traffic on Misiryeong-ro, and check wipers and tires for overnight rain
