Hello, this is 속초어때 (Sokcho Eottae). At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, Sokcho (속초) is 27 degrees with a few clouds. But today's chance of rain is 86%. Which means it is exactly the kind of day to glance out the window and leave your umbrella at home, and exactly the kind of day to regret that decision in the afternoon. And one more thing overlaps with it. Counting today, only five days remain when you can go into the water at a managed beach in Sokcho.
Sokcho at 10 a.m., starting with the numbers
First, today's basic figures. The temperature is currently 27 degrees, with a daytime high of 28 and an overnight low of 24. Considering that heat wave advisories were going up and down in Sokcho until just a few days ago, that is clearly a step cooler. A low of 24 degrees means it falls just barely below the tropical night threshold (25 degrees), so tonight you should be able to sleep with the windows open.
- Water temperature 25.9 degrees, wave height 0.2 m - A wave height of 0.2 m is closer to a ripple than a wave. It is at a level where your feet will not be pushed around.
- Sunrise 05:50, sunset 19:05 - Sunrise on the 18th last week was at 05:43, so in eight days the morning has grown 7 minutes later. The speed at which summer is retreating shows up right in these numbers.

For reference, unlike the West Sea, the East Sea (동해) has a tidal range of only about 30 cm. Tides almost never expose mudflats or submerge paths, so in Sokcho it is far more practical to check wave height and precipitation before the tide table. By that standard, this morning's sea is among the calmest of the entire summer.
Sokcho's sea: five days left, today included
Sokcho Beach (속초해수욕장), Oeongchi Beach (외옹치해수욕장) and Cheongho Beach (청호해수욕장) already ended their season on Sunday, August 23. The only beach in Sokcho with safety management in place right now is Deungdae Beach (등대해수욕장), and it too runs only until Sunday, August 30. Today (the 26th), then the 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th. Exactly five days.
The reason Deungdae Beach was extended is clear. The water deepens gently and stays shallow, the waves are usually calm, and it draws many family visitors, so the decision took into account the demand for water play continuing through the end of August. On a day like today, with a wave height of 0.2 m and a water temperature of 25.9 degrees, this is effectively the only place you can bring an elementary school child. Keep in mind as well that entering the water is allowed until 6 p.m., and that night opening already ended as of August 12.
The problem is the other beaches. Yesterday (the 25th), the Sokcho Coast Guard Station ran a safety campaign at the closed beaches together with some 30 people from related agencies, and the core message was this: closed beaches do not have safety management staff stationed at all times. The sand is still there and the water temperature is the same, so it looks exactly like yesterday, but one thing has completely changed: if something goes wrong in the water, there is no one there to reach out a hand immediately. The Coast Guard emphasized four rules.
- Wear a life jacket when entering the water
- No entering the water after drinking - the route of having a plate of raw fish and a glass of soju and then going to dip your feet is the most dangerous one
- Take safety precautions when snorkeling, and always go with at least one other person
- Do not enter the water if the weather turns bad or the waves get higher
Today I especially want to stress that last item. The wave height is 0.2 m right now, but the chance of rain is 86%. If the wind direction changes as the rain clouds pass through, a calm sea can be a different thing within an hour or two. If you plan to go into the water with a child, today the right call is Deungdae Beach.
The rain comes in the afternoon, so the two morning hours are today's sweet spot
A few clouds, but an 86% chance of rain. That combination does not mean rain all day; it means it is clear now and it will pour later. It is also a pattern that has repeated several times in Sokcho this month. So the earlier you can pull your outdoor plans forward today, the better.
- 10 a.m. to noon: walking courses such as Badahyanggi-ro, Yeonggeumjeong and Oeongchi Port. With a wave height of 0.2 m, water will not splash onto the coastal walkway, so no worries about your shoes.
- Around the 13:32 high tide: this is the best window for photographing the breakwater and the rocky shore. The East Sea has a small tidal range, but the color of the water looks deepest around high tide.
- Afternoon: switch to indoors. A folding umbrella beats a long one. Sokcho's afternoon rain often passes heavy and short, so you spend more time carrying the umbrella than using it.
Three access roads and six crowded spots: today's detours
It is a Wednesday morning, but access traffic is not exactly light. Misiryeong-ro (toward Seoul) is congested, Seoraksan-ro (toward Seorak) is congested, and Donghae-daero (coast and downtown) is slow. That is the result of last-week-of-August vacation crowds overlapping with family trips before the school term starts. If you are setting out now, consider the Hangyeryeong route instead of Misiryeong, and for moving around town the inner roads are better than Donghae-daero.
As of 10 a.m., six places are crowded.
- Cheongchoho (청초호) - very crowded
- Daepo Port Observatory - crowded
- Hanwha Resort Seorak Waterpia - crowded
- Seokbong Pottery Museum - crowded
- Oeongchi Port - crowded
- Cheoksan Foot Bath Park - crowded
Of the six, only two are purely the sea; the rest are a lake, indoor venues and hot springs. This list shows exactly where people moved once the sea closed. If Waterpia and the Seokbong Pottery Museum are already crowded this morning, they are likely to fill up even more in the afternoon when the rain starts. If you have indoor attractions planned, it is better to move now. Cheongchoho has a wide perimeter, so crowds can spread out; if the Expo Park side is blocked, try entering from the walkway on the opposite side. Cheoksan Foot Bath Park closes early in the afternoon, so be sure to check the closing time before you visit.
On a rainy afternoon, the best place to walk in Sokcho is the middle of the market
The scheduled car-free street at 속초관광수산시장 (Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market) operates every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are two sections, the area around Jungang-ro 147beon-gil and the area around Jungangsijang-ro, and it was recently reported one outlet after another that in the month since it began on July 20, vehicle traffic fell by about 89% with not a single accident. If you are reading this at 10 a.m., the closure has just started.
The real advantage of a car-free street shows on rainy days. An umbrella narrows your field of view, and having to dodge cars on top of that turns shopping into a chore. On a day like today with afternoon rain in the forecast, a market where you can walk a good stretch without an umbrella by following the arcade and the shop eaves is the most practical rainy-day course in Sokcho. On top of that, the Sokcho Municipal Museum drew 26,000 visitors this summer, up 32% from last year. That means a great many people were looking for indoor alternatives, so if you are visiting in the afternoon, I recommend hurrying a little.
Sokcho's September has already begun
The beaches closing does not leave Sokcho's calendar empty. If anything, September is more packed.
- September 19 - the madanggeuk play 쪽빛황혼 (Jjokbit Hwanghon): residents of the Seorak area get a 50% discount. Worth taking advantage of if you live in the area.
- September 27-28 - 설악문화제 (Seorak Cultural Festival): held around the Expo Lawn Plaza and Seorak Rodeo Street. Starting from the first 설악제 (Seorakje) in 1966, it is Sokcho's oldest festival.
- The children's cultural performance 아트박스 (Art Box): the August performances sold out one after another. The autumn rounds are also likely to sell out quickly once booking opens.
