But tonight the most searched number in Sokcho is not the temperature — it is the 78% chance of precipitation. Some of you may have seen that number alone and shelved your plans, thinking ‘it is going to rain tonight,’ but once you break it down hour by hour the story changes completely. First, let us clear up the misunderstanding. A chance of precipitation shown on a daily basis often represents the value for the highest single hour of that day. So a display of ‘78% today’ does not mean ‘it starts raining now.’

Why all three access roads are running clear
As of 10 p.m., the road situation into Sokcho is Misiryeong-ro (미시령로, toward Seoul) clear, Donghae-daero (동해대로, coast and downtown) clear, Seoraksan-ro (설악산로, toward Seorak) clear. All three open at the same time is something that did not happen once all last week.
There is a reason. The 19th Gangwon School Sports Club Festival, held in Sokcho over two days on the 5th and 6th, closed yesterday. It was an event that brought in 22 sports, 272 schools and 4,827 students. Counting accompanying teachers and parents, the actual inflow was far larger, and that is why all three access roads into Sokcho were congested at once last Saturday. With that crowd leaving yesterday, Sunday, Sokcho today has returned to a weekday that finally feels like a weekday. If you saw a headline saying ‘the festival is still on’ and made plans around it, those articles were previews published before the opening. The event has ended.
Looking at congestion at the attractions, Cheongchoho, the Daepo Port (대포항) observation deck, Oeongchi Port, Sokcho Port and 켄싱턴호텔 설악 (Kensington Hotel Seorak) are all at the ‘moderate’ level. As of 10 p.m., the only place marked as congested is the area around Sinheungsa (신흥사) on Seoraksan. If you are planning Seoraksan for tomorrow morning, it is safer to arrive at the Sogongwon parking lot with a little time to spare. Checking the 속초어때 real-time congestion once more right before you leave will save you a wasted trip.
The next three weeks – dates to mark on your Sokcho calendar
Early September in Sokcho is the quietest stretch of the year, with the summer tourists gone and the autumn schedule not yet started. But this stretch is not very long. Let us start with the confirmed dates.
- The 61st Seorak Cultural Festival – Friday, October 2 to Sunday, October 4. Held at the Sokcho Expo lawn plaza and around Seorak Rodeo Street. That is 25 days from today. This year it is being prepared with a larger share of citizen-participation programs.
- The first autumn foliage on Seoraksan – late September to early October. With average temperatures in September and October forecast to be higher than normal this year, the first foliage is expected to be somewhat later than usual. Take the peak to be from mid-October onward.
- The Chuseok holiday – Thursday, September 24 to Saturday, September 26, with Chuseok itself on Friday the 25th. There is no Sunday within the holiday so there is no substitute holiday, but it carries through Sunday the 27th, making it effectively a four-day break. It also means Misiryeong-ro will be jammed again 17 days from today.
If you want to travel Sokcho at a relaxed pace, from now through the third week of September is this autumn's last quiet stretch. Lodging prices, restaurant queues and road conditions are all at their best in this period.
For residents – the Yeongrangho floating bridge, the process has begun
Let us touch on one piece of local news among the travel information. At the Sokcho City Council plenary session on August 31, the 4th supplementary budget bill, which includes 700 million KRW for demolition of the Yeongrangho floating bridge, was passed. The 400 m floating bridge, opened in November 2021, cost about 2.23 billion KRW to build, and its demolition had been decided through court-ordered mediation in July 2024. With the budget secured, follow-up steps such as the detailed design services will get under way in earnest.
What matters in practical terms is that you can still walk it. Demolition has to go through the design services, so it is not a facility that disappears tomorrow. If you have never walked across the surface of Yeongrangho, a fine-weather tomorrow morning is a good opportunity. The full loop trail is about 8 km, and a short course including the floating bridge takes little more than an hour.
