Hello, this is 속초어때 (Sokcho Eottae). Here is a rundown of the situation in Sokcho (속초) as of 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Normally crowding at tourist spots should have eased off by this hour, but today is a little different. Six places — the Daepohang Port (대포항) Observatory, Dongmyeonghang Port (동명항), Deungdae Beach (등대해변), Sangdomun Stone Wall Village (상도문돌담마을), the Owl Exhibition Hall (부엉이전시관, Happy Owl House), and The K Seoraksan Family Hotel (더케이설악산 가족호텔) — are all registering as 'very crowded' at the same time, and all three main access roads into Sokcho are moving slowly. For those heading out this evening, and for residents who have to cross town at this hour, we have gathered only actual data and confirmed facts that should help.
Why are as many as six places 'very crowded' at 8 p.m.?
There are three main reasons.
- Night opening at the beach ended yesterday (August 12). From July 21 to August 12, the city of Sokcho designated a 130 m stretch around the central walkway of Sokcho Beach as a zone where entering the water at night was permitted, allowing swimming until 9 p.m. During that period the evening crowds stayed on the sand, but as of yesterday the water-entry hours reverted to the original cutoff of 6 p.m. People leaving the beach earlier have scattered to the ports, night-view spots and indoor facilities, which has actually pushed evening congestion up.
- The heat wave and tropical nights. According to the medium-range forecast released by the Korea Meteorological Administration on the morning of August 13, the maximum perceived temperature is expected to climb above 33°C in most parts of the country, with the heat wave and tropical nights continuing. A 'night-oriented' pattern of putting off daytime activity and moving around after sunset has taken hold, so crowds inevitably pile up between 7 and 9 p.m.
- The structure has shifted to stay-type tourism. Tourism in Sokcho has recently evolved into a stay-type model in which visits, overnight stays and spending have all grown together, and Sokcho Beach drew 450,000 visitors within a month of opening. As day trips decline and the share of visitors staying one night or more grows, the evening hours become the 'main event' instead.
Sokcho's sea right now: water temperature 25.8°C, wave height 1.6 m
At this hour the water temperature off Sokcho is 25.8°C and the wave height is 1.6 m. Judging by water temperature alone these are excellent conditions for swimming, but a wave height of 1.6 m needs some interpretation.
- Once it passes 1.5 m, swells at or above an adult's waist height roll in repeatedly. Tubes and air mats are easily pushed out to sea in an instant, so it is best to refrain from using them on a day like today.
- On days with high waves, the risk of rip currents (counter-currents) rises as well. Even at a depth where your feet touch the bottom, if you feel yourself being pulled by the current, do not swim straight back toward the shore — get out by moving parallel to the shoreline first, then come in.
- If you had surfing or paddleboarding in mind the waves are not bad, but we do not recommend beginners going in alone.
Above all, this is not a permitted time to enter the water. Because the night opening has ended, entering the water after 6 p.m. is subject to control. Unauthorized entry during hours when lifeguards have withdrawn means a delayed initial response if an accident occurs. We recommend enjoying the evening sea only up to ankle depth, as a walk.
Exactly ten days until Sokcho's beaches close
This year's closing date for Sokcho's beaches is August 23. Counting from today, ten days remain. If you are planning to get in the water during the time left, here is how to schedule it.
- Enter the water between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The 9–11 a.m. window in particular has fewer people and less harsh sunlight. It is also the time slot with the least parking stress.
- Avoid noon to 3 p.m. On days when the perceived temperature tops 33°C, the surface temperature of the sand rises far higher. Burns to the soles of children's and pets' feet are concentrated in this window.
- The sea stays the same after the closing. However, lifeguard service and shower facilities shut down, so from September onward it is right to shift your plans away from 'swimming' toward 'beach walks and night views'.
All three access roads slow — how to get around this evening
Right now Misiryeong-ro (미시령로, toward Seoul), Donghae-daero (동해대로, the coastal and downtown sections) and Seoraksan-ro (설악산로, toward Seoraksan) are all reported to be moving slowly. Let us break it down by destination.
- If you are leaving Sokcho now: Between 8 and 10 p.m., vehicles wrapping up one-night stays overlap with day-trippers heading home. If you are not in a hurry, having dinner and a coffee first and setting off after 10 p.m. is in fact often faster.
- If you are coming into Sokcho now: The coastal section of Donghae-daero backs up for a long stretch because of vehicles waiting for beach parking. If your accommodation is downtown or around Joyang-dong (조양동) or Gyo-dong (교동), it is better to detour inland along the downtown roads instead of the coastal road.
- Toward Seoraksan (설악산): The slow traffic on Seoraksan-ro is largely driven by vehicles checking in to accommodations. The K Seoraksan Family Hotel showing as very crowded is part of the same picture. If you are due to check in, dropping off your luggage a little away from the queue in front of the main entrance, rather than in it, will save you time.
Try handling each crowded spot this way
Rather than simply avoiding the places currently rated very crowded, you can still enjoy them fully by changing just the timing and the approach.
- Daepohang Port Observatory and Dongmyeonghang Port: This is the hour when demand for evening raw fish peaks. Switching to takeout and eating at your accommodation, instead of waiting for a table on site, cuts your wait by more than 30 minutes. When taking live fish to go, ask for plenty of ice, and if your travel time exceeds 20 minutes, dishes such as mulhoe (chilled raw fish soup) or hoedeopbap (raw fish rice bowl) are safer choices.
- Deungdae Beach: As a night-view spot connected to Yeonggeumjeong (영금정), the crowds here are thickest at this hour. If things start backing up at the parking lot entrance, do not push all the way in — parking on the Dongmyeonghang Port side and walking over is faster.
- Sangdomun Stone Wall Village: As these quiet village alleys have become known as a tourist spot, evening visitors have increased. This is a space where residents actually live, so please refrain from making noise late at night and from photographing private property. An early-morning visit actually produces much better photos.
- Owl Exhibition Hall (Happy Owl House): As a signature indoor refuge, it draws families looking to escape both the heat and the crowds at once. Closing time is drawing near, so it is more realistic to aim for right after opening tomorrow morning rather than today.
At 속초어때 we keep tracking these hour-by-hour congestion patterns, and the tip that makes the biggest practical difference during the summer peak season is ultimately 'same place, different time'. Shifting your visit by two or three hours brings far more satisfaction than switching to a different attraction.
Sokcho next week — know this in advance
The event with the biggest impact on traffic in the remaining summer schedule is coming up.
- WATERBOMB Sokcho 2026 — Saturday, August 22: It runs from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the outdoor grounds of 한화리조트 설악 쏘라노 (Hanwha Resort Seorak Sorano). About 10,000 attendees are expected, and the city of Sokcho held an interagency response meeting to review performance safety management, traffic and parking, crowd management, and the emergency medical support system. That said, it is fair to assume that congestion on Seoraksan-ro and around the resort is effectively guaranteed that day. Unless you are attending the concert, we recommend moving any plans toward Seoraksan on the afternoon of the 22nd to a different day.
- Beach closing — Sunday, August 23: The day after WATERBOMB is the closing day. From the night of the 22nd through the afternoon of the 23rd, lodging demand and returning traffic converge all at once. If you are planning to book accommodation in Sokcho this weekend, you need to reserve now while options remain.
Evening tips for residents
Residents find peak-season evenings just as inconvenient as travelers do. We will point out only the parts that genuinely help.
- Do your grocery shopping and hospital or pharmacy visits in the morning. Between 7 and 9 p.m., downtown roads and large supermarket parking lots overlap with tourist traffic. Moving non-urgent errands to the morning is the biggest time saver you will feel.
- Inland downtown roads instead of the coastal road. When the coastal section of Donghae-daero is slow, an inner downtown route is faster even if it means going a bit out of the way.
- Please avoid personal plans toward Seoraksan on Saturday the 22nd. A mass exodus occurs around 10 p.m., when WATERBOMB ends.
- If you document waste and parking complaints with photos, it helps a great deal with requests for improvement after the peak season. Tourism in Sokcho has in fact grown across visits, overnight stays and spending, with the local economy surpassing 2.4 trillion KRW in scale — and for those gains not to leave residents with nothing but inconvenience, concrete records need to exist.
In summary
Sokcho this evening combines a sea at 25.8°C with 1.6 m waves with six spots rated very crowded and three access roads moving slowly. With the night opening over, evening swimming is not allowed, so treat the night sea as a walk; shift your timing or switch to takeout for the ports and night-view spots; and put off driving until after 10 p.m. — that is close to today's right answer. And for the ten days left until the closing, 9–11 a.m. is the most comfortable window for getting in the water.
Today we looked at the congestion situation in Sokcho on the evening of August 13, the sea and road conditions, and how to respond hour by hour — did you find it useful? We will be back next time with even more useful information.
