Hello, this is 속초어때 (Sokcho Eottae). As of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, Sokcho (속초) is 29°C with clear skies. The chance of rain is 14%, so it is effectively a day with no rain worries — and given that showers and cloudy skies ran for three straight days from last weekend, this is the first properly open blue sky in a while. The daytime high is forecast at 31°C and the morning low at 23°C, and under the Gangwon Regional Office of Meteorology's advisories, a heat wave advisory remains in effect for the Sokcho lowlands and the Sokcho mountain areas. Early yesterday morning, Gangneung (강릉) and Sokcho even recorded a so-called super tropical night, with pre-dawn temperatures never dropping below 30°C.
But there is a reason this fine weather is not entirely welcome. The official closing day for Sokcho's beaches is Sunday, August 23 — four days from today. To put it more precisely, the weekdays when you can enjoy the Sokcho sea without being jostled by crowds are just three: today, Wednesday; tomorrow, Thursday; and the day after, Friday. On Saturday the 22nd, 10,000 people will pour in for Waterbomb Sokcho 2026, and Sunday the 23rd is closing day, when the last swimming crowds pile on top of that. Today we will lay out how to use these remaining three days without regrets, and how to dodge the real-time crowds and traffic.
Today's Sokcho Weather: Scarier Than the Heat Are the Three Midday Hours
The number 29°C alone looks bearable, but a Sokcho beach on a clear day under a heat wave advisory feels different. The surface temperature of the sand rises more than 10°C above the air temperature, and there is almost no shade on the beach. Especially on a cloudless day like today, the UV rays come straight down.
- Between noon and 3 p.m., do not stay on the sand for long without a parasol. This is the time slot with the most heat-illness reports.
- Bring drinking water at a rate of 1.5 L per person; convenience stores at the beach have long lines this time of year, so it is better to buy it in advance.
- The inside of a car climbs well past 40°C. After parking, do not leave children or pets behind — and the same goes for smartphones and power banks.
- The heat does not let up at night either. Judging by early yesterday morning, there is a high chance of another tropical night tonight, so be sure to check the condition of your room's air conditioner at check-in.
On the plus side, a 14% chance of rain means you will not have to tear up your plans because of rain. It is the first day this week you can lock in outdoor plans with confidence, so it makes sense to knock out the beach, observatory, and walking courses you have been putting off today.
Closing D-4: Only Three Weekdays Left, Today Included
Sokcho City is heading toward the official closing of Sokcho, Deungdae, Oeongchi, and Cheongho beaches on the 23rd. This summer, Sokcho's beaches had already passed 450,000 cumulative visitors in early August, just one month after opening — more than 10,000 above the same period last year. Density on the final weekend is bound to be just as high.
There is one thing you must remember here. Night opening at Sokcho Beach already ended on August 12. Right now, in line with lifeguard duty hours, entering the water is only allowed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is completely different from late July and early August, when you could go in the water until 9 p.m., so if you planned to arrive in the evening and swim, you need to move your whole schedule earlier.
If you are reading this at 10 a.m., you have roughly 8 hours of swimming time left today. And there are five days left, today included, when you can enter the water before the closing — three of them uncrowded weekdays. After the closing, lifeguards and support facilities shut down, which makes going in the water effectively impractical.
Water at 25.5°C and Waves at 0.4 m: If You Have Kids, Today Is the Day
Today the water temperature off Sokcho is 25.5°C and the wave height is 0.4 m. A 0.4 m wave rolls in gently at somewhere between ankle and knee height, nothing like the swells of over 2 m a few days ago. Water at 25.5°C with 0.4 m waves is among the best conditions this summer for going in with a child.
The tide chart is worth checking too. Today is 14물 (the 14th tide day), and tomorrow, the 20th, is 조금 (jogeum), the neap tide. In Sokcho today, high tide is at 06:53 and 21:11, and low tide is at 00:34 and 14:23. On the East Sea coast the tidal range is around 40 cm, so the tide chart is not as decisive as on the West Sea, but there is still a difference.
- Around 2 p.m. (low tide at 14:23) is when the water is shallowest and the sand widens out. This is the safest window for young children to play in the water. It does overlap with the peak of the heat, though, so shade, a hat, and a rash guard are essential.
- If you came for photos, the 30 minutes on either side of sunset at 19:15 are the prettiest. Swimming has already closed by then, so the beach is much more relaxed.
- Sunrise is at 05:44. With pre-dawn temperatures at 23–26°C these days, a sunrise walk is easy going — and above all, there is nobody there.
Rip currents and swimming accidents happen even on calm days. Do not go past the buoy line trusting a float alone, and never enter the water after 6 p.m., when lifeguard duty ends.
It's 10 a.m. on a Weekday and All Three Access Roads Are Backed Up
Traffic into Sokcho today shows 미시령로 (Misiryeong-ro, toward Seoul), 동해대로 (Donghae-daero, coastal and downtown), and 설악산로 (Seoraksan-ro, toward Seoraksan (설악산)) all congested. Three arteries jammed at once at 10 a.m. on a Wednesday means late-summer vacation traffic is still pouring in even on weekdays.
Crowd levels at attractions have already climbed. Daepohang Port (대포항) Observatory is at 'very congested', while 부엉이전시관 (Bueongi Jeonsigwan / Happy Owl House), 더케이설악산 가족호텔 (The-K Seoraksan Family Hotel), 마레몬스 호텔 (Maremons Hotel), Deungdae Beach, and 상도문돌담마을 (Sangdomun Stone Wall Village) are at the 'congested' level. If it is like this at 10 a.m., the peak will fall between noon and 2 p.m. You can check real-time crowd levels on 속초어때, so we recommend taking a look right before you leave and reshuffling your order.
- If you are leaving now, do not head to the beach first — start with the relatively relaxed 영금정 (Yeonggeumjeong) and Cheongho Beach area. Daepohang is better after 3 p.m., once the lunch peak has passed.
- If you are on your way into Sokcho, 1–3 p.m. is the stretch when the flow eases up somewhat. There is no need to push to arrive in the morning.
- If you are heading home, 4–7 p.m. is the worst. Have dinner and set off after 8 p.m., and your time through Misiryeong-ro drops noticeably.
- The downtown stretch of Donghae-daero has closely spaced signals, so detours do not work well. For getting around downtown, leaving the car at your lodging and walking or using a bicycle is far faster.
10,000 People at Waterbomb on Saturday the 22nd: Plan Your Weekend Route in Advance
Waterbomb Sokcho 2026 runs on Saturday, August 22, from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the area of 한화리조트 설악 쏘라노 (Hanwha Resort Seorak Sorano). Sokcho City held an inter-agency safety response meeting to review performance safety management, traffic and parking measures, crowd management, and the emergency medical system, and the expected turnout is about 10,000 people.
This is where plans diverge. If you are coming for Waterbomb, it is safer to take public transport or set out early, factoring in that roads toward Seorak will be packed during the daytime on the 22nd. Conversely, if you want a quiet trip with nothing to do with Waterbomb, you are better off dropping the Seorak-dong and Daepo area from your plans entirely on the afternoon of the 22nd.
And Sunday the 23rd is closing day. With crowds chasing one last swim overlapping with cars heading home the day after Waterbomb, it has a high chance of being effectively the busiest day in Sokcho this summer. Which leads to the conclusion that the only relaxed window is from today through Friday.
A No-Regrets Day Course for a Day Like Today
Here is a suggested order for making full use of a clear, hot weekday.
- 10 a.m.–noon — Swim at Cheongho or Oeongchi Beach. There are fewer people than around Daepo or Deungdae, and with 0.4 m waves the water is gentle.
- Noon–2 p.m. — Take the heat peak indoors. Have a late lunch at 중앙시장 (Jungang Market) or the downtown restaurant district, and aim for distinctly Sokcho dishes like mulgomtang (물곰탕), ojingeo-sundae (오징어순대), or galchi-sokjeot gimbap (갈치속젓 김밥), which have recently been featured on TV. That said, right after a broadcast the waits are long. If lining up feels like too much, turning to a nearby old-school shop serving the same dish is another option.
- 2–4 p.m. — It is low tide, so the sand widens out. If you are with a child, fit in another short swim now; otherwise, slot an indoor attraction like 부엉이전시관 into this window. The crowding may have eased compared with the morning.
- 4–6 p.m. — A walk through 상도문돌담마을 or 로데오거리 (Rodeo Street). Rodeo Street has G-Lab Local Festa programs running from daytime into the night, which makes strolling fun.
- After 6 p.m. — Swimming closes. Wrap up with a beach walk timed to the 19:15 sunset and some nighttime lighting attractions. In August, Sokcho has night programs centered on light and sound running in several places.
Tourism in Sokcho this summer has clearly shifted from day trips to stays. The city's tallies showing visitors, lodging, and spending all rising together reflect that trend. For the remaining three days, staying a long while in one place suits this year's Sokcho better than straining to see a lot.
