Hello, this is 속초어때 (Sokcho Eottae). Here is the news from Sokcho (속초) as of 6 a.m. on Sunday, August 30. Right now Sokcho is 22°C with a few clouds, and sunrise already passed at 5:53 a.m. It's bright outside but the sky isn't clear — exactly the kind of air you'd expect on the morning of the last day of August.
The people in Sokcho today split into two large groups. One is those who want to dip their feet in the sea one last time this summer, and the other is those who have to get out of Sokcho before the day is over. The problem is that today, of all days, these two schedules collide head-on. Let's look at why they overlap, and which one you need to decide on first so your day doesn't unravel, using the actual data as of 6 a.m.
Sokcho at 6 a.m. — let's check the numbers first
These are the figures that today's decisions rest on. You need to build your route on these numbers, not on gut feeling.
- Weather : currently 22°C, a few clouds / daytime high 26°C, low 22°C / 61% chance of rain
- Sea : water temperature 25.5°C, current wave height 1.1 m
- Wave forecast : morning 1.0–2.0 m → afternoon 0.5–1.5 m (northern Gangwon (강원) coastal waters, northwest to north winds at 6–12 m/s)
- Tide : 10물 (10-mul) / high tide 4:16 a.m. and 4:06 p.m. / low tide 10:08 a.m. and 10:47 p.m.
- Sun : sunrise 5:53 a.m. / sunset 6:59 p.m.
- Inbound traffic : Misiryeong-ro (미시령로, toward Seoul) congested, Donghae-daero (동해대로, coast and downtown) congested, Seoraksan-ro (설악산로, toward Seoraksan) congested
First, one piece of news you can relax about. As of the time of writing, there are no weather advisories in effect for Gangwon's East Sea (동해) coast, including Sokcho, Goseong (고성) and Yangyang (양양), or for the northern Gangwon coastal waters. What went out in the Korea Meteorological Administration's advisory bulletin early this morning was the lifting of a heavy rain advisory in Jeollanam-do (전라남도); no advisory was issued for the Yeongdong side of Gangwon. That said, with rain forecast nationwide on the last weekend of August, the possibility of roughly 5–40 mm of rain remains for Gangwon's East Sea coast as well.
Don't misread that 61% chance of rain. The number does not mean it will rain all day; it means there is a 61% chance of rain at some point today. It's a different animal from those days last week with a 100% chance of rain. Bring an umbrella, but this is not weather that calls for scrapping your plans entirely.
Today the sea is calmer in the afternoon than in the morning
The most important feature of the sea today is that the waves get lower as the day goes on. The morning is forecast at 1.0–2.0 m, dropping to 0.5–1.5 m in the afternoon. The measured wave height right now is 1.1 m, which means there may be stretches during the morning that run higher than that.
Travelers usually assume that ‘you have to head out early because the sea is calmer in the morning’, but today that bit of common sense is turned on its head. With northwest to north winds blowing at 6–12 m/s, the morning sea is actually rougher. Once waves pass 1.5 m, even an adult standing waist-deep starts getting pushed around. If you've come with children, keep morning water contact to ankle depth and save the real swimming for the afternoon — it's safer.
You need to look at the tides along with this. Today is 10물, with low tide at 10:08 a.m. and high tide at 4:06 p.m. Around low tide the water pulls far out and the sand looks wider, but the seabed that is normally submerged is exposed, so it's easy to hurt your feet running barefoot. Conversely, around high tide at 4 p.m., the width of the beach shrinks noticeably. If you're setting up after 3 p.m., it's best to put your bags and mat well back from the waterline from the start. ‘I went in for a moment and came back to a soaked bag’ happens most often during the high tide window.
등대해수욕장 (Deungdae Beach): 6 p.m. today is truly the last
속초해수욕장 (Sokcho Beach), 외옹치 (Oeongchi) and 청호해수욕장 (Cheongho Beach) already closed on August 23. The one place left is 등대해수욕장, and its one-week extension through today, August 30, is the end of it. In other words, today is the only day left when you can legally enter the sea in Sokcho with safety staff on duty.
What's easy to miss here is the closing time.
- Swimming is permitted from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Night opening (swimming until 9 p.m.) ran only from July 21 to August 12 and has already ended.
- Sunset is at 6:59 p.m., so even though there's still daylight, you have to be out of the water at 6 p.m.
So the total swimming window today is nine hours, and the stretch with stable wave heights is the afternoon. Do the math and the five hours from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. are the last golden window to get into the sea in Sokcho this summer.
But of all things, the peak of the drive home is also in the afternoon
This is where the problem starts. Right now, at 6 a.m., all three routes — Misiryeong-ro, Donghae-daero and Seoraksan-ro — are showing congestion. Three access roads jammed at the same time at 6 a.m. on a Sunday is not a picture you usually see. It looks like the result of the last weekend of August, cars aiming for a pre-dawn hike in Seoraksan (설악산), and cars that came in for sunrise all overlapping.
If the morning is already like this, you don't need me to spell out what Sunday afternoon will look like. Sunday return traffic is normally worst between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. And the swimming golden window laid out above runs from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The best time to be in the water and the worst time to be on the road overlap almost completely. In Sokcho today, ‘enjoy the sea to the fullest and drive home without traffic’ is effectively not a combination that exists. You have to give up one of the two, or shift your timing well forward or back.
So today you have to pick one of three first
Here are three routes 속초어때 has put together for today's conditions. Decide which one you fall under before you move, and your day gets much simpler.
- A. Drive-home-first (with children / work on Monday)
Get in the water right at the 9 a.m. opening → pack up at 11:30 a.m. → lunch, then leave before 1 p.m. With morning waves at 1–2 m it's hard to go in deep, but ankle- to knee-deep is plenty to make ‘the last sea of the summer’ happen. Go past 1 p.m. and your time on the Misiryeong stretch balloons. - B. Sea-first (you can stay another night or leave late)
Spend the morning downtown or at the market, swim from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. → dinner → leave after 8 p.m. This route uses the lowest-wave window exactly as it is, and puts you on the road after the return-traffic peak has broken. - C. Half-and-half (the choice most likely to fail)
This is playing until 3 or 4 p.m. and leaving right after. High tide (4:06 p.m.) narrows the sand, the roads are entering their peak, and you're rushed even for a shower. Today of all days, I wouldn't recommend this combination.
If it rains, where to go is already decided
The places currently showing as ‘very crowded’ in Sokcho are six: 속초해수욕장, 척산족욕공원 (Cheoksan Foot Bath Park), 속초 설악해맞이공원 (Sokcho Seorak Haemaji Park), 한화리조트 설악 워터피아 (Hanwha Resort Seorak Waterpia), 부엉이전시관 (Happy Owl House), and 속초항 (Sokcho Port). Of these, only two are indoor facilities where you can get out of the rain: 워터피아 and 부엉이전시관. Which also means that the moment the 61% chance of rain becomes reality, the crowds at the other four will pour into these two.
- 설악 워터피아 : the mid-season runs from August 25 to October 12. Day passes run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., night spa runs 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and afternoon passes start at 2 p.m. Outdoor sunbeds and cabanas may not operate depending on weather conditions, so check before you go.
- 속초시립박물관 (Sokcho Municipal Museum) : visitors this summer reached 26,000, up 32% from last year. Which means plenty of people are already using it as an indoor alternative on rainy days.
- 속초관광수산시장 (Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market) : every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., two stretches — Jungang-ro 147beon-gil and Jungangsijang-ro — operate as a ‘car-free street’. Vehicle traffic drops sharply, so walking with an umbrella is less of a burden, and the stretch has been well received as the reduction in traffic volume has recently been confirmed. Note, though, that once 6 p.m. passes, the cars come back in.
At 6 a.m. almost nothing is open yet
Some of you may be looking at the crowd data and getting ready to head out right now, but there's something to flag. Crowd indicators reflect the flow of visits across the whole day, so it does not mean all six of those places are busy at this hour. In fact, almost none of them are actually open right now.
Beach swimming starts at 9 a.m., 워터피아 at 10 a.m., and the car-free street also at 10 a.m. If you're moving between 6 and 8 a.m., open coastal walking stretches like 속초항, 영금정 (Yeonggeumjeong) and 해맞이공원 are effectively the only option. If anything, this is the time of day with the fewest people, which makes it the best time for a walk along the coast. For breakfast, restaurants in the market alleys and around the port open early, so aim for those. Long-standing old shops like the 명태회냉면 (myeongtae-hoe naengmyeon) places over in Gyo-dong (교동) are still packed as well.
From tomorrow, it's a different season's Sokcho
Once today passes, Sokcho enters a completely different phase. The beaches all close, demand for water play moves indoors, and the roads reorganize around weekends. In exchange, the autumn calendar starts filling up. On the 19th of next month, the madanggeuk performance ‘쪽빛황혼 (Jjokbit Hwanghon)’ is scheduled, with a 50% discount for Seorak-area residents. Given that the children's cultural performance ‘아트박스 (Art Box)’ sold out again and again all through August, it's worth booking autumn performances early.
This summer Sokcho hosted 워터밤 (Waterbomb) for a fourth straight year and lifted the local commercial district along with it, and the museum posted a 32% increase. Today is the last day of that summer. If you're going in the water, 6 p.m.; if you're heading home, before 1 p.m. Remember just those two numbers today and your day won't go far wrong.
