Hello, this is 속초어때 (Sokcho Eottae). We bring you the news from Sokcho (속초) at a time just past midnight on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Today is the day a season actually ends, both for travelers visiting Sokcho and for the residents who live here. Deungdae Beach (등대해수욕장), which kept its doors open the longest in Sokcho this summer, finishes its season today. From tomorrow morning, Sokcho will have not a single officially open swimming beach left. And of all days, the conditions on that final day are not easy. With a 100% chance of rain and waves at 1.2 m, the sea that had been as calm as a lake all week has risen again on the last day. Let us go through the numbers one by one to work out how you should spend today.
Sokcho right now, by the numbers first

The first thing that catches the eye is the high of 25°C and the low of 23°C. The daily temperature range is only 2 degrees. It does not climb much during the day and does not drop much before dawn either - the classic late-summer temperature graph you get when cloud and humidity cover the sky. It is clearly different air from the Sokcho where heat advisories were going up and down in mid-August.
Deungdae Beach, today is the last day
Sokcho's main beaches, including Sokcho Beach (속초해수욕장), Oeongchi Beach (외옹치해수욕장) and Cheongho Beach (청호해수욕장), already closed on August 23. Of them, only Deungdae Beach decided on a one-week extension through August 30, and that last day is today. The reason for the extension was clear as well. Deungdae Beach has shallow water and normally gentle waves, so families make up a high share of its visitors, and demand for water play was expected to continue through the end of August.
There is one thing you must keep in mind here. 'Closing' does not mean a physical gate appears on the sea. It means the safety staff and water rescue personnel withdraw, and the buoy-marked swimming zone and the emergency response system disappear. In fact, the Sokcho Coast Guard Station (속초해양경찰서) puts out separate safety guidance for entering the water at closed beaches - that is how completely different going in becomes after closing. Same sand, same water temperature, but the difference is whether or not someone is beside you when an accident happens.
To sum up, today looks like this.
- Today (August 30) : 1 beach in operation, Deungdae Beach, with safety staff on duty and swimming permitted
- From tomorrow (August 31) : 0 open beaches within Sokcho
Swimming hours at Sokcho's beaches are usually from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Converted to the clock, the time left today is exactly 9 hours. If you have been putting off even dipping your feet in the sea at Sokcho this summer, it is no exaggeration to say today is the last chance.
But the waves are 1.2 m - treat going in today as 'conditional'
If you have been watching the sea at Sokcho this week, you will know how much that number stands out. Only a few days ago the waves were 0.1-0.5 m, calm enough that you could practically call it a lake. Today it is 1.2 m. That is not double - it has jumped by several times.
You may not have a good feel for what 1.2 m waves are actually like, so: it is about the level of waves rolling in regularly at chest height while an adult stands waist-deep. Adults can handle it, but there are three problems. First, tubes and inflatable boats get pushed outward in an instant. Second, when the waves are big, the water pushed toward the sand flows back out through narrow channels, which easily creates rip currents. Third, the water turns cloudy, so it is easy to lose sight of where your child is.
So if you are planning to go in today, please keep at least these three things.
The water temperature is still a comfortable 25.7°C for going in. But 'the water temperature is good' and 'the waves are safe' are completely different stories, and today of all days it would be good to judge them separately.
Today's sea timetable - low tide 10:08 a.m., high tide 4:06 p.m.
Today is 10-mul. High tides are at 4:16 a.m. and 4:06 p.m., low tides at 10:08 a.m. and 10:47 p.m. Translated into an actual schedule, it works out like this.
- 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. : the stretch around low tide (10:08 a.m.) when the water is at its shallowest. This is the most favorable time slot today for those coming with children. It is right after opening, so there are relatively few people too.
- Noon to 2 p.m. : the water starts rising and the crowds approach their peak.
- Around 4 p.m. : high tide (4:06 p.m.). The width of the sand shrinks noticeably, so set your mat and parasol farther back from the start. This is the time slot when people most often leave their belongings up front and have them get soaked.
- 6 p.m. : swimming ends. And it is the final moment of this summer's beach operations in Sokcho.
- 6:59 p.m. : sunset. For about an hour after closing you can still watch the sun go down from the beach.
The rain is 'rain at times'. A 100% chance of rain does not mean it pours from morning to night; it is closer to meaning it will definitely fall at some point during the day. From what 속초어때 has observed all summer, on days like this the Yeongdong region often gets one short, heavy shower passing through. Bring an umbrella, but there is no need to scrap your whole plan.
It's midnight and six places are 'very congested'
The places registering as very congested at this hour are six: Sokcho Beach, 한화리조트 설악 워터피아 (Hanwha Resort Seorak Waterpia), Dongmyeong Port (동명항), Jangsa Port (장사항), 부엉이전시관 (Bueongi Jeonsigwan, Happy Owl House) and 속초관광수산시장 (Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market). Six places all being very congested at midnight means the Saturday night crowd has not yet cleared out. Most facilities have already closed, so take it as the population staying in the nearby accommodations and parking lots showing up as is.
Once daytime comes, the character of these six places diverges. On a rainy Sunday, try changing the order like this.
- When the rain is pouring : 속초관광수산시장, 부엉이전시관 - the market has a wide arcade section, one of the few places where you can fold up your umbrella and walk
- When the rain stops : Deungdae Beach, Dongmyeong Port, Jangsa Port - today we recommend putting Deungdae Beach first. You can go to the others tomorrow as well, but for the beach today is the end
- Regardless of weather : 워터피아 - though from late August the peak-season hours have ended and closing has moved earlier, so be sure to check that day's operating hours on the official website before you set out
속초관광수산시장 has been running a 'car-free street' daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. since July 20. Two sections, Jungang-ro 147beon-gil and Jungangsijang-ro, are covered, and since it took effect vehicle traffic has dropped sharply and it is credited with settling in without pedestrian accidents. Not having to dodge people and cars at the same time while holding an umbrella makes a far bigger difference at the market on a rainy day than you might think.
Three access roads congested - when should you head home today?
Misiryeong-ro, Donghae-daero and Seoraksan-ro are all registering as congested. Congestion as of midnight means cars are still coming in, and most of those cars will leave all at once this afternoon. On top of that, today is the last Sunday of August and the weekend as summer vacation draws to a close. It is one of the days of the year when the rush home is heaviest.
- Leaving before 2 p.m. : the safest choice. A route where you have an early lunch in Sokcho and then head out
- 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. : the stretch when congestion on Misiryeong-ro is longest. Avoid it if you can
- After 8 p.m. : spending the evening in Sokcho and leaving late. If you watch the sunset (6:59 p.m.), have dinner and then go, the time is not wasted either
When Misiryeong-ro is jammed there is also the option of detouring via Hangyeryeong (한계령, National Route 44), but on a rainy day visibility on the mountain road is poor, so the time saved may not be great. Rather than forcing a detour, adjusting your departure time is generally better.
How Sokcho changes in September
The beaches closing does not mean summer in Sokcho is over. If anything, September is the season when the people in the know come.
- The water temperature falls slowly : today's 25.7°C water stays in the 20s for a while into September. Swimming is difficult, but it is actually a good time for dipping your feet, walking the beach and surfing
- The madang play '쪽빛황혼' (Jjokbit Hwanghon) : a Sokcho performance is scheduled for September 19, with a 50% discount for residents of the Seorak area
- Sokcho Municipal Museum (속초시립박물관) : visitors this summer came to 26,000, up 32% from last year. It is already a proven indoor alternative for rainy days
- The market's car-free street : maintained daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. regardless of season
September is the time when the peak-season crowds and prices drop away and the color of the sea, if anything, deepens. Even if you miss the last swim today, there is reason enough to come back to Sokcho.
